steelepulse Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 I don't particularly see the need nor reason to have me sign a w9 form as AIA Thailand is it's own company, even if it is under the umbrella of AIA US. What is the purpose and reasoning for this?
Tywais Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 And what is a W9 form ? Request for taxpayer identification number and certification. Ok, had to look it up. Does seem odd though.
bino Posted June 20, 2013 Posted June 20, 2013 If you're not a US citizen, then refuse to sign and tell them that it has nothing to do with you. If you are a US citizen, I'd try to resist as much as possible because you just know that Uncle Sam is somehow going to bite you in the ass over it one day. 1
steelepulse Posted June 21, 2013 Author Posted June 21, 2013 I never had to sign such a form in years past, and see no reason to do so now.
elektrified Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Thailand is now trying to get as as many USA citizens to sign U.S. tax forms as possible. Obviously pressure from you know who... A year or so ago I was visiting my broker's office and she pulled out a U.S. tax form and said her Manager in Bangkok wants me to sign it. I reminded her that I don't own any U.S. shares, refused to sign it and she said "Oh yes of course, must be a mistake". Never heard another word about it.
