I am currently on a 60 day extension of my 12 month Non 0 (based on marriage). I will be leaving the country in a few days and will return on a 30 day visa exempt. My question is can I convert this to a 3 month Non 0 in Thailand or would I need to do a visa run to KL or wherever. My plan is to get an extension based on marriage now that my monthly pension exceeds 40,000 Baht and I would obviously prefer not to do the trek to KL if possible.

Yes, you can convert in Thailand but will probably need to do this in Bangkok. It would be easier to get a single non-O while abroad.

If you have the pension proof now why not extend for one year from your current extension? It was on a non immigrant extension/entry it seems so should be accepted. If not getting the visa from a Consulate would be easy enough and avoid having to obtain two copies of pension income from Embassy (and that extra cost).

I have only just got the pension letter from the UK so I still have to send everything to BKK to get my letter from the embassy. I am leaving for Dubai tomorrow so I have run out of time unfortunately. The Thai embassy in Dubai run an appointment system I believe which will be difficult as I won't know until the last minute when I will be free. I will contact my local immigration office in Nakhon Si Thammarat when I get back as they are sometimes quite helpful but failing that I will go to KL and get a 3 month Non O. Probably cheaper than sitting around in Dubai for a couple of days.

Once you have the Embassy letter you can apply for change (with 15 days remaining on stay) at Bangkok even if local office can not do. Then you would do the actual extension of stay at your local office 60-90 days later. But as said often an extra payment for new letter required.

I thought one needed 21 remaining to convert a visa. Maybe this only applies to a "Tourist Visa". Can you clarify? Maybe something has changed ...

It changed about the time land visa exempt entry became 15 days and have seen reports as low as 7 days being accepted - but 15 days seems to be the normal asked time now.

Do you have residency in the UAE? From info on this webpage that is required to get a visa in Dubai.
