I would like to hear from anybody who has heard of, or has had direct or indirect knowledge of a case, whereby a Thai national has been released early, before the completion of his sentence.

How was this done in practice, who did they have to know.

I have specifically not mentioned his offence, as I hope this tread can be about other successful early releases, rather than the merits of his individual case.

I think that this kind of information might be held closely by most.

But, you might hear from someone that knows someone that has a friend that.....

Yes, possible. I have had the process explained to me by very credible sources. It depends on a lot of things. After some time, several months to a few years, the prisoner can approach the warden who will then approach the victim and act as a mediator. If the prisoner can come up with the money that both the victim and warden want, then he will be let free.

Separate to my above source, years ago a Brit typo told me that he was arrested and imprisoned for contract killing someone in Chaing Mai. He paid the warden 50,000B after 1 year and was released. No idea if it's true.

Lets make sure we keep this within the realms of legal options

What, talking about paying people off is within the realms is it??

Come on, bribery is well out of the legal circle.

I have no idea about legal ways but would agree a bribe payment may be the only way.

I also would think it depends on the crime. A smaller motoring offence may be easier than drug dealing.

I'm forming something of an idea.

If the inmate has been of good behaviour then after serving a half to two thirds ( cannot remember exact) of the sentence they can be released on a type of parole (have to report to police monthly, I think). Days or months are also deducted for auspicious occasions including the Kings birthday. Amnesty is sometimes granted for certain classes of convict, again on auspicious occasions, for example 'prisoners with less than xxx months left are released'.

Some types of offences are, I believe, excluded from these concessions, eg heavy duty drug dealing.

This is all legal and no monies are involved. 'Other' ways have been mentioned already.

I learnt a case in the south, the son of a rich businessman killed someone and he was free immediately for an amount of some 6-digit Thai baht. a year later this kid was arrested due to drug dealing, then money was not the solution.

As long as the Bahts legal tender, then its a legal option. Legally speaking.

Let me tell you from experience, you're in for a long haul.

Took my family 5+ years and allot of money.

( Connected Uncle and several high ranking Army officers and even with a Kings Pardon my family member still sat in prison for another year after )

In our case it was who you know and how much can you pay.

Family member was released at 5 years and some months while serving a 29 yr sentence.
