Hi there. I have a visa debit card with Wells Fargo, out of the US. I am able to use it at the ATM daily, although there is a limit each day. There are times when I need to lay my hands on a few thousand USD however and the money needs to come out of this account. Is there no way i can use the debit card at a exchange counter, or in a bank, or is there a special money brokering place somewhere that would swipe my debit card and give me cash, in return for a commision?

If such a place does exist I appreciate the commision will be expensive but thats fine. The reason I need to do this is to pay a supplier in Europe when I visit each month and paying cash gives me a large discount on the service I purchase anyway, so commision costs will get swallowed up in the money I save.

Note: I am not able to do wire transfers from my WF account as I do not have a US social security number (Im British), although I do have on line banking.

Any advice or suggestions would be appreciated

Cash advance at the bank.

Aeon atm machines do not have atm withdrawl fees, not sure about the exchange rate though.

The cash advance at a bank will still use the same limits , if you want a higher limit call the bank, there are 2 kinds of limits one is for cash the other for purchases.

Exchange rates are set by MC or Visa not the bank

Buy a bunch of gold at one of those gold shops with your debit card & passport; then go to another shop on the same block and sell it for baht.

Then go to a bank and convert it into US dollars -- lots of carrying charges but no limits except to the balance in your ATM card

Similar to JLCrab suggestion. Most gold shops will give you cash on your credit or debit card. Big issue is that they usually charge 15%, but if that works for you it is a quick fix. Maybe next time you will be able to prepare in advance and save on the charges.

Not true for every card, apparently. I can always get more than my ATM limit by going to the bank.

Go to any exchange booth with your card and passport. Ask the girl there whats the maximum you can get cash back. Every time Ive done this they say 20,000 baht at a time. Withdraw the 20,000 and then ask her if you can have another 20,000. Some will and some wont, if they wont just walk to the next one down the road. It shows up as a cash advance on your bank statement but you can withdraw as much as you like. Well I can from my UK account and I can withdraw more than my daily limit. My daily limit is £300 and 20,000 baht is more near £400. I once asked before and they said I can withdraw up to 100,000 baht in 5 separate transactions.
