boiler room work

Recommended Posts

I was just wondering if anyone ever found out what happened to the employees of the boiler room busts that happened a while back?

The reason I ask is that I've been offered a job , and the company is being a little secretive about its address etc but it selling investments .. I have a strong suspicion that it might be a boiler room set up. I'm desperately low on cash and cant be too fussy about the work I pick up, they are doing a hard sell on me and want me to fly to Philippians immediately.... they offer a return ticket so if it doesn't work out I can fly back ,, they said; but what are the implications if I am selling on behalf of a bogus company? if I wasn't so in need of work I would steer clear of this offer but when needs must .......

Can anyone throw some light on what I might be letting myself in for and the implications, if my fears turn out to be founded.

telesales is bad enough but the inside of a Philippine jail really doesn't have an appealing side to it... If anyone can offer an alternative job quickly I'd be grateful , Sales and management background with hypnotherapy skills, horticulture, advanced driving and massage, talents ... LOL...

Agree maybe it's time to go back home and start at Square one. Eeking out a life abroad is not a good thing. Go back make a big bit of cash then reassess what your going to do. I would think from your post you are not wanting the job so don't try to get members to talk ya into it.

Don't go down this road.

The big bust (a joint co-operation between the FBI and the Australian police) happened back in 2001.

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/england/1722154.stm

The year after, my former friend (an ex Special Forces guy from NZ) was gunned down in Sukhumwit.

I'm now just about the last of the few. You stay alive by staying clean. Avoid all scams and criminal activity out here in the Far East.

gulp!!! thanks for the comments... I have long term commitments over here, so back home Isn't really an option....... its just a short term cash flow issue I have to overcome...

I've always been so successful at everything I've done in the past, I don't know why it so hard to get decent work in Thailand without a specialist degree..From what I've seen of the people working here most have a masters degree in bullshit,, rather than any real intelligence, work ethic or common sense.

Any advise on best places for employment classifieds for a farang?.

Very hard to get into oilfield related work overseas if you have no experience, most countries can get locals to do the 'grunt' work for a 1/10 of the salary of a westerner.

the big boom for big cash jobs is Aussie, along with big cash tax...only thing on the horizon in Burma medium term are a few new pipelines and platfroms...that this was manned up 18 months ago already

Yes, seriously, what do you know about Burma in the next year or so? Do you think there might be good opportunities there? It seems like it might be a great place to be for a while, even without a huge income. But what are the possibilities for making USD250 to USD500,000 per year?

If you consider working in a boiler room, it says a lot about your morales, irrespective of your cash flow problem.

The Burma work is not even close to being over. Don't know where you get your info on that but I know that PTTEP received 17 oil concessions for the yea alone thats 17 different rigs to be put to work. 1 Drillship, 1 Semisub, 3 J/U's and with 12 yea thats right 12 land rig concessions. How you come up with your numbers is very odd because Petrovietnam and Petronas also have their fingers in the pie.

Not sure where all these expierenced guys in O&G you think just keep popping up. I have never seen a more in expierenced oil field as the one today. If the OP were to look in an HSE field and was so inclined to sit through a NEBOSH course it would put him a mile ahead. Old dinasour mentality of you need 10 years before you look to work overseas is laughable now. I know guys who have gotten in with as little as 3. But hey I have only been doing this for 16 years what the F* would I know sitting in my office offshore in Malaysia right now

There a quite a few very experienced offshore O&G guys on TV, who have been this racket 20/30 years plus and quite a few of them work SEA, so they do actually know what they are talking about.

As regards your 10 years oversea's comments...its hardly a dinosaur mentality...its very prevelant, and its a basic rule I use myself when looking at someones CV...dependent on the job for me its either 5 years experience or 10 years, as typically anything less than those numbers, one can be assured the person doesn fully know the job they are doing....Of course some people manage to slip in with less experience, but in my experience of 25 years offshore, typically they dont last too long...

As regards your NEBOSH comments, what you have suggested is exactly the reason there are so many "Safety professional" Xxxxxxxx in the industry...they have no practical/hands on/trade background go an get a piece of paper, somehow manage to get a job with no practical experience, most likely because they are cheap...

and end up causing mayhem offshore because they dont know what they are doing and normally making an already hazardous job even more hazardous.....a piece of paper does not infer they know what they are doing....all it proves it that they can pass an exam.. I have lost count of the number of these so called "safety professionals" I have run off jobs over the years and could count on 1 hand the number who were actually worth a sh*t and all these guys had come from industry/trade backgrounds...wink.png

but hey I have only been in game 25 year so what the xxxx would I know sitting in my corner office offshore...tongue.png

another selfish bastard in the making. after all, all you are asking is the complication of what you are getting in rather than your potential victims isnt it? read it properly guys, it seems that he have no issues ripping people off if there is no implication.

have anyone ever seen how these poor retired blokes getting scammed the crap out of a boiler room?

and talk about people having master degree in bullshit rather than real intelligence, work ethic or common sense

Maybe you could read the post properly!!!.. I would be uncomfortable trying to get someone to unnecessarily switch gas supply. What my post is asking or infers is . I don't know how genuine this company is or not , I get suspicions with any telesales job . they are all just there to sell you something you could probably do without. My view is if you want something, you will find it yourself no one needs to push you on the phone... but society doesn't demonize 99% of the companies that do this. do they? , Most large organization all have a telesales teams... However reading it properly I was hoping you would understand that I ask; what if I unwittingly fly over and realize after,I am in this situation selling something illegal...... what are the consequences? can I walk away without trouble ? if the police raid will I be considered an accomplice or just an employee doing a job... Some of us do have quite high moral code. you think very low of everybody to assume anyone would be happy to rob an old lady of her savings that just wouldnt or couldnt happen its just not in me no matter what the rewards..... If my moral code wasn't so high in the 1st place I wouldn't have found myself in such a cash strapped position in the 1st place.... But you must be such a nice guy to judge people so fervently without knowing them we must have tea sometime.... urgg!

go back and read what I wrote...never inferred Burma work is close to being over...I said "medium" term, of course there is going to exploration in Burma, but your suggesting to the OP than anyone who can walk and chew gum at the same time will be able to get a job there...guess again.

Unless your in a senior supervisory position in current job offshore...your possibilities on a US 250-500k/yr pay packet are slight.

As i said it's a new oil patch. Dinasour is always going to see things the old way. People have moved from driller to DSV in under 13 years and are doing quite well. (corner office has no windows on this rig who would want it) All high and mighty dinasour (not spelt wrong either)
