thebear
We have been back to Hua Hin recently after a few years break and were quite impressed with the new developments but IYO what would make it a better place to live in? I've heard better hospitals are needed and no doubt there are many who would say less expats moving there but taking that as a give what else is there? PeaceBlondie
Surely, a better hospital, or at least one that has a better reputation, among farang, than Sao Paulo has. Such as, specialists who actually can make a diagnosis other than "Contact dermatitis" and "I have no idea what's wrong with you." There are rumours that a new hospital is being built, just as there were once rumours of a new super-mall coming along. Put that hospital on your Christmas wish list, then! Parking downtown for motor vehicles that are not taxis or rentals.
taxexile
have no moral stance against either drinking or prostitution but a smartening up or the closing down of the mostly falang run tumbledown bars and shacks that are to found or tripped over around the "night life" alleys of this otherwise pleasant town would not go amiss. those alleys are so sleazy and downmarket that i have seen some frightened tourists donning condoms just to walk through there on their way to the hilton. the area around the railway station could be "tidied up" a tad too , the station , especially with that huge tree outside and the little crescent of food stalls is a gem , a reminder of times gone by and should be nurtured. get rid of these buggers. johnnyk
Yes, better acces to the beach would be nice. Right now there is not much 'beachy' feeling unless you are right on the beach.
silk123
Needs a good international school as the one there at the moment that claims to be international is a scam and a trick and a disgrace to the greedy owners and town. I hear one is on the way but is way way out of town. if the greedy owners were not so greedy and hired real teachers including real thai teachers rather than kids who can't speak English. silk123
At least in the picture above there is a road along the beach and catwalk unlike in hua hin where the only time you can see sand and water is if you stay in one of the big hotels or go walking on the beach via the one main entrance to it near the hilton. That i think is the main dissapointing thing about hua hin. "Wanted. Hijacked Beach in Hua Hin."

From people who seem to know, it is now under construction. http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=66107
Ollie
Isn't this a mugs game? Don't like the bars - easy, don't go. Don't like "downmarket", easy, find somewhere that fits your social aspirations. Don't like the access to the beach - easy, open your eyes or find somewhere else with better access. Want a jogging or cycle track - easy, find somewhere else. No catwalk - whatever that is, easy, go somewhere where there is one. The photo kindly produced is obviously your idea of heaven - feel free to enjoy. Don't like the schools, don't like horse shit, what next....don't like Thais who don't conform to our patronising image...??? If you all had your wishes what would be left is not what people go for. Too many NIMBY's for my liking.
PeaceBlondie
Thanks, Ollie; you're entitled to your opinion. At least you didn't say "Go back home!" Hua Hin is home now, but I've never gone to the downtown beach. Never been to most of the back street bars. We're entitled to make a wish list, although the jellyfish aren't going to read the list. Beach access roads? They're everywhere, at least south of the downtown area, almost every 100 meters to Khao Takiab and below. Even down by the army base, they're every couple of kilometers. Like we used to say about all those folks who wanted to move to Chiang Mai - it's a horrible place, don't come here!!

But I like the place as it is. Sure, build the stores and other things needed, but leave the central area alone. I like the piers, the so-called "downmarket" areas, the mish-mash etc and I'm hopring to hear the old market is up and running again? I'll find out for myself in a few weeks. Agree traffic can be a pain, but so what, it is where I currently live! Now if only market forces would see the demise of most of the tailors... And PeaceBlondie, I like your comment, "never been to most of the back street bars"? Nor have I, and I've not liked all that I have been in, but I bet there are people who do! Kathe
Such a lovely place..but to answer the post, get rid of the horses and all their s__t on the beach sand. Horses on Huahin Beach is the symbol of our Beach here, and might be before you were born. We love Hua Hin because Hua Hin has it owns charm and nature, no night life or bars on the beach. Good idea for bike and jogging lanes. I just hope that Hua Hin will not soon look like Pattaya. Edited April 21, 2006 by Saothai

Netfan
I suppose this will sound bad, but....what would make Hua Hin better would be to turn back the clock and stop all the uncontrolled development which has brought all the fun things that we didnt used to have like overwhelming traffic; crime, greed and the sense that you are no longer in Thailand when walking anywhere near the Hilton area. "Paradise City"? Maybe a few years ago. Not anymore.

JimsKnight
A Decent professional police force that actually sends out police to emergency calls! A massive bloody brawl broke out at a bar one night after 4 calls to the MIB they finally show'd up 2 hours later, after everything has died down and the culprits had scattered to the four winds! Excellent response time fellas!

Excellent response time fellas! Yeah, a buddy and me watched a Thai kid waving a gun around one night. One of HH's finest was playing pool in a bar down the street. SOmeone ran to get him, he peaked out and went back to playing pool. He wanted no part of whatever was going on! elGrande Posted 2006-05-31 23:05:46 Are you talking about the NJ Nets? I didn't think the Nets had any fans HA! Not since I moved to Thailand they don't. I go all the way back to Chocolate Thunder and Michael Ray Richardson. If you had lived here 15 years ago when you had to fight your way through the rats in the fresh market to buy something for dinner you would not complain about having a first class shopping mall, supermarket, movie theatres, bowling alleys, not to speak of the chance of a Starbucks coffee once in a while. Yes there is a price to be paid for progress....there always is. But Hua Hin has had traffic problems every weekend for the past 15 years...its not something new. Over-development!? I think its a feather in Hua Hin's cap that we have more intenational five star hotels than any other resort in Thailand...yes, including Phuket. If you don't want progress you will have to move to Issarn.
