David48 Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 I'm sure that Nelson Mandela - a real man of the world and a role model to millions will appreciate the sentiments. But I do have to make comment on how Thaksin is portrayed in the Media sometimes ... and this is not a political statement. The photo used in the lead article is a slightly cropped Wikipedia photo which can be viewed here. It was taken when he was the Prime Minister of Thailand and the image that, by inference, portrays that he is still the Boss here ... no pun intended. Why not use something closer to reality such as ... Taken from the Forbes magazine Not disrespectful and probably closer to the reality that he is not a government leader in Thailand. Just saying like ... . 1
Popular Post Soutpeel Posted July 1, 2013 Popular Post Posted July 1, 2013 "Mandela spent 27 years of his life in prison during his fight against apartheid but never gave up on his peaceful battle, said Thaksin" One could very easily debate that statement, a debate for another day perhaps, but our man in Dubai should go an check his facts, as I am sure the relatives of the people killed in the Magoo's bar bomb blast would disagree with the statement of a "peaceful" battle.... If he believes the fight against apartheid was "peaceful" then one must conclude what is going on in the South of Thailand currently and for many years is a peaceful fight as well... 4

OzMick Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 There are similarities - they both endorse(d) terrorism as a means to achieve their goals (though NM now rejects it), and both aspire to a Presidency. Nelson achieved his Presidency, perhaps Thaksin will, if he is still alive after 27 years in jail. 2

It's ironic, Mandela spent 27 years in jail, yet forgave his oppressors and persecuters. Thaksin who has yet to spend one night in jail, is constantly whining and feeling sorry for himself. He can't even simply praise Mandela but has to include some self pitying remarks. And as for 'lies', he's surely an expert on that. 7

rubl Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 "criticize his detractors who, he claimed, “continually come up with lies to gain advantage over their opponents.”" With Thai defamation laws as they are and even Thaksin haven won cases I can only assume that said lies were not really spelt out and allocated to specifically named persons here in Thailand. Mind you, I wonder if he also mentioned his 'rice pledging' scheme which is such a tremendous succes
gedster Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Mandela spent 27 years in prison for his believes and I am a fugutive criminal and coward on the run. Actually he spent 27 year in jail for a bomb plot and not being willing to give up an armed struggle via the military wing of the ANC - Umkhonto we Siwe... It wasn't a peaceful battle at all. We that lived in South Africa at the time were expecting a civil war. The minority govenrment then disbanned the ANC, which ended up being the ruling party. 1
barrybankruad Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 Mandela was offered release from prison in 1994 if he renounced terrorism. He refused to do so and therefore had to spend another six years before he was let out. 1

"He did see Mr Mandela," the foundation's spokesperson Sello Hatang told News24. Thait Spot Posted July 1, 2013 Posted July 1, 2013 To be quite honest here, Thaksin has much more in common with Ronny Biggs than Mandela. Any comparison between the 2 is, quite frankly, rather vile 1
