If you overstay any consequences are of your own making, but, is there more to this case. "Officers approached him and asked for his passport" Why was he asked to show his passport, was he doing something wrong or was he pointed out to immigration ?

In the years that I have been here I have never been asked to show my passport (except in a bank or at the Immigration office).
