A farang, allegedly Swiss, one of the known names <snip>, in his 50-s, wearing something reminding camouflage pants and a funny hat of the same colour, last known mobile phone No. <snip> - all this could be fake - goes around forcing deals with foreigners and then coming with the police which clames that you are doing something illegal and forces you to pay them...

He has been doing it for around 10 years, they also have an Indian guy who they call in as a translator.

Do not pay up and insist on going to police station

I have heard of this scam which my friend said was pulled on him.. he posted on craigslist that is he had a box of fake mazerati (sp?) Shirts to sell. He was cleaning around the house ran across the box of shirts he bought awhile back thinking he would sell them back in his home country.... but never got around to it... in anycase after he posted the ad a farang made arrangements to see the shirts and when he showed up he had the bib with him. They claimed it was illegeal to sell counterfiet shirts in Thailand even if u state they are counterfiet.. hmmm.. so they put him a car and the farang became the nogotiater with claims of jail time, huge fines, and deportation... but of course all that could be made to go away if he paid 20k baht before they got to the police station. Luckily he just got paid so they took him to an atm so he could get the cash. It all sounded quite fishy to me but my friend said he was pretty scared so he paid up and they dropped him off and that was the end of it.. if it was me in a similiar sit I would have made some phone calls to a Thai friend who would know enough to tell me if these guys where for real or not... what would u have done in a similiar sit? The moral of this story... do not try and sell anything on the net u can buy on the street in Thailand while u are still in Thailand...

They claimed it was illegal to sell counterfeit shirts in Thailand even if u state they are counterfeit. Surprise, surprise.

This is a sting operation, not a scam and I bet the same applies with the OP.

If someone is openly advertising counterfeit goods, or just selling them with a nudge, nudge and a wink, than that is a criminal act and I wouldn’t describe the baiting and apprehending of someone in the process of committing a crime as a scam, but rather, well done the police and all those who work with them, catching these people is commendable.

Anyone, even those of questionable intelligence, such as your alleged friend, should know that the selling of fake and counterfeit goods is criminal, not only in Thailand, but worldwide and especially advertising the fact, that has to be nominated for the award of being the dumbest action of the century.

The Thai police are not as stupid as some may believe; the long arm of the law is as strong here as anywhere and they`re right on the ball.

Be warned.

The other gem is the Indian guy who wants to 'see what Thai money looks like' - cant believe those clowns don't get a serious beating. They must pick their marks very carefully. Haven't been hassled by the fake monks for a while either, but I expect they are still doing the rounds in KL. Pathetic.

Hahaha yes the fake monks are still doing rounds in Chunkat and Jalan Ampang in KL. Fun times. Last time I was eating BBQ seafood one came up to me and was (shocked) Asking for money. I asked where he was from he said Thailand. So I started to speak to him in Thai asking a varity of questions. Oddly enough he just made a rude sign with his middle finger and walked away.
