OK, the clowns near to my home have just started renting ATV 'buggies', BUT not off road to drive around Patong. They only seem rented by a Arab looking guys, that cant drive*, and they are just cutting laps around Patong. Any ideas on the legality, as if THAT really matters, regarding these on the roads?

* The muppet couldnt drive, I told him so - tough guy wasnt happy, things went south!

Illegal, since these ATV's can't be registered in Thailand.

Agree, they are illegal on the street as they can't be registered or licensed. But If some Thai business owner is connected enough, no problem until the Land Transport Office decides to enforce the law. Good luck getting the laws enforced around here unless it against a farang business owner or an over stay on their visa.

As I thought, so who would be TECHNICALLY responsible?

I KNOW the farang will end up in the hot seat should any BIB decide to pull them, but who would actually be in the wrong?

In which case? Accident or police check?

Police check: driver is in the wrong. The owner is just doing that, owning, not driving.

Accident: no idea how that would play out with insurance etc.

I'm assuming you live near Simon Cabaret. I seen those for rent and they are actually road legal in some countries.

They aren't the regular ATVS. They have seats and a steering wheel.

Edit. Didn't read replies.

They are Polaris ATVs/UTVs and have red plates. There's a company out there selling them (on the Thai currency/sold site) at prices of between 550k and 920k Baht. Apparently they come with a green book. As they seem to have full headlights, rear lights, indicators etc I suppose they are roadworthy.

I think however the only off roading they do with them is Nanai Rd when it floods!

More questionable is how these swarthy cheese eating renters can afford to rent them (and the big Yamaha scooters) and why they are seen near ATMs so much.
