KABUL, AFGHANISTAN (BNO NEWS) -- At least four girls were killed after a roadside bomb detonated in southwestern Afghanistan, local authorities said Friday.

The improvised explosive device (IED) planted in the city of Lashkargah in Helmand Province and detonated as a group of girls were trying to cross a river on Thursday.

According to provincial governor spokesperson, Omar Zwak, two of the girls' bodies were found while two others were missing, Khaama Press reported. No group or terrorist organization claimed responsibility of the incident.

Also in Lashkargah, a female police officer and her son in law were killed during a separate roadside bomb in the city's Surab District.

Authorities usually blame Taliban militants for such attacks, as they commonly use roadside bombs and similar tactics targeting afghan and coalition security forces, although civilians are commonly killed.

The Afghani female police officers, trained by ISAF, are often not provided protection by Afghan male army and police force personel. They are very brave women who in many cases work in remote towns and villages. It is forecast they will be decimated once ISAF pulls out and no sanctury has been offered to them.
