Been looking around at various gay friendly accomodation, but all of these seem to be quite upscale (by Thai standards). However, I've met the nicest people and closest friends at gay friendly hostels in various other countries-was wondering if any of the following locations: Phuket, Bangkok, Koh Samui and Chiang Mai have budget hostels that you've found to be fun and cool...

Just to add-I have in mind dorm rooms that I experienced in Australia-the sort of thing that a 22yo backpacking student like myself would stay at there...accomodations may involve a different system in Thailand? would be interested in knowing..

I thought first of Dreaded Ned's site, but I can't think of any guesthouses, as such, on there. In Chiang Mai, you can try Seven Sons, if it's still in business under that name. That was my first address in CMai, as a tourist, 3 years ago.

The tourist places that you mention are full of guesthouses which probably wouldn't care who you bring home with you. The ones in Thailand I've used didn't care.

I lived at the same condo as the owner of "Seven Suns" but didn't stay at the guesthouse during that incarnation. I have three sons and four grandsons.

I can't see that the URL you listed, Steve, competes with any existing gay-specific sponsors on ThaiVisa, so I'll leave it on there.

I can't imagine that the typical, small guesthouse can afford to have a big advertising budget. What's the name of that gay-friendly bar on Huay Kaew, south of Central - is it Soho? That might be a place for a backpacker to meet other gay tourists, although I don't know how many gay tourists there are in the early 20's age range.

Was going to suggest the Babylon barracks as a gay option offering dorm-style accomodation but I suspect you were looking to meet people at a social level. The rooms have gone up in price to about 1500bh too so its not an option if you're on a budget.

The "Connect " guesthouse in Phuket is quite reasonable. You can get a single room starting at 495 baht per night (it doesn't have dorm rooms).

It is pretty much all gay and you have quite a good opportunity to meet other guests as they have a cafe as well, and they organise trips to the islands, etc.

Research this before you leave home though, as gaypatong seems to be one of the sites blocked in the stupid 'website blocking campaign' the Thai government is running at the moment, and you might not be able to get through to the website once you are in Thailand.

No, it is not blocked (yet).

1.LOS as such has very few hoStels, in the way OZ has'm for those foreign workers. Cheap accomm abounds, but in sometimes other places as you think (NO in Phuket), and is called guesthouse (khe-Hauw in proper Thai), and is a kind of hotel stripped off anything that may cost money (hot water, towels, bedsheets, etc.). SOME may have dorms (usually older places that have converetd their bigger room) and these, if at all, are manly taken by young JPNese (who can be quite fun, except that they all smoke)

2.those cheap g-hss (just read thatb LP guidebook, after all OZzies pride in the exports) and tend to NOT allow Thai friends/guests/partners in, (dont complain, No discrimination between mans or ladies)

3.the next step up are cheap hotels, over-abundant in any tourist place, prices from 400 THB/room/Nite, with AC, roomservice, maybe even a TV and fridge etc. If Thai=-run these usually (but ask before check-in) to bring in guests, though an extra fee may be charged (called joiner fee), =the diff between single/double occupation. Not often much of ''socialising't hough.

4.sadly, websites like dreadedned 9also OZrun) and the lke tend to be correct= at the time they were written, often as much as the last century ago. Or, just like LPguidebooks: they dont get proper updates.

its not specifically gay, but there is a hostel on Naritiwat Road just east of Silom (on the north east corner). Right near Chong Nongsi BTS.

i have had gay friends stay there with good experiences...and they thought the staff was gay or at least gay friendly....

i dont know the price... but i believe its part of the Hosteling Intl network...

A good friend of mine has very recently opened a budget price gay b & b guesthouse offering simple and inexpensive yet very clean and friendly accommodation with good food and facilities.

in samui you could try Charlies Hut on chaweng beach in Chaweng... very gay friendly and very cheap huts - about 150bht per night. in bkk the white lodge by MBK mall is friendly and about 450 a night... stayed there with my bf and it was fine...

re ... no guests ... check into any place as a double room and no problem ... and only the best places will ask for names up front in my experience

My recommendation to those who want to stay in the Saphan Khwai (lots of gay places around) is the gay friendly Hotel Pradiphat (B.650 for room, B.750 for suite), also rooms by the hour downstairs.

The H. Pradiphat is between Liberty Gardens H. and Elisabeth H., almost opposite the Mido H.

Ask for room at the back, less noisy and has view over a nice Thai house.

I found the karaoke bars over there to be interesting ... and well Farose .... (the sauna) ... ummmm wow!

I love the Malaysia Hotel. I would say the place is at least 50 percent gay. The 24 hour coffeeshop is 90 percent gay (and oh so colorful....ladyboys,rentboys, tourists,you name it). The later the hour the better. The rooms are shrines to the late 60's/early 70's. Rates range from 500-700 baht. Pool is small but decent. Its a very well run place for very little money. Great location, close to subway.

sadly it just isn't a place where respectable Thai guys will go ....

Its a pity.. the Ngam Duphli area is becoming very pink.

Just found a place off Silom Soi 2/1 which has good clean rooms for 1200 bh, the Regent Serviced Apartment. Not gay but quite friendly.
