Changing my son's name to mine - Married but my name not on BC

Featured Replies

Hello all,

There are several threads on the forum related to this matter and I have read them carefully, however I still haven't found a clear answer with regards to my issue:

My son was born last year in Thailand, but due to unforeseen circumstances I was unable to attend the birth. In typical Thai fashion, one of my girlfriend's cousins who happened to be there at the time was named as the father on the birth certificate.

We are currently in the process of registering our marriage and it should be sorted within the next three months. I will then be my son's legal guardian.

The problem, however, lies with the birth certificate: my son doesn't bear my surname and the one feedback I got regarding this is that it can be very hard to revert.

Is it really that hard to get the amper to issue a revised birth certificate if we're married and the said cousin shows up with us and explains what happened?

Thanks.

On the run up to my lad's birth, it was stressed how terribly important it was to not only have my name on the birth certificate as the father, but the Thai translation of my name had to match any MFA certified translation such as in the affidavit to get married and my passport. This was to prevent bureaucratic issues with things like passport applications, ID cards and other registrations he may do that require the father's translated name to be stated. Getting things changed on birth certificates is virtually unknown as far as I know but someone may have actual experience and post some good news.

I mean what was she thinking of when sticking her cousins name on the birth certificate. May as well have used the milkman's name, no?

She was out of the picture as there were complications during delivery. Anyway what's done is done and I'm now working on setting things straight, I'm already in touch with a lawyer.

You might have to do a DNA test to show you are indeed the father.

That a family member poses as the father is not uncommon, but it does complicate things if you want to change who the father is on the birth certificate. They very well might want some proof.

Thanks for the info. We'll start by talking to the officer who issued the original birth certificate and take it from there.
