It depends on where you are and what type of pies you want.

In Soi Bua-Khao (Pattaya) a few years ago there was a bloke selling English pies that tasted pretty good but slightly on the expensive side. Don't know if he is still there.

I had been craving a good pie and this past week I decided to make my own. It was the first one I ever made and it turned out wonderful, rolling the crust was however some work; I used Betty Crocker Pie Crust Mix in a box that I found at Villa Market. I used Wilderness Pie Filling & Topping that I bought at Lotus. I now understand why they somewhat expensive because they require some work if prepared like this. Good luck in finding pre-made pies.

Lady pies, available from Villa Supermarkets, made by an Aussie girl in Phuket, many varieties, around 95 Baht per pie, very tasty!

Nice one Bob!

I also use Betty Crocker crusts...Drescoll strawberries are about 160/small pack, need two, all together a strawberry pie comes to about 500.B. Ah well its only every few months that this happens.

Sunrise Taco pies are 600B, they just opened a new booth in the Paragon supermarket, in where the meats and frozen things are, which sells all their products.

Voila!

It would be nice if the Brits would stop insisting that the subject is British Pies. The subject is American Pies, which are very different. I have never had a piece of pie in Thailand that would good for the money. Usually the portion is way too small and the price is way too high. Having said that, if you want to pay the high price for a small piece, Rich Man-Poor Man in Jomtien makes great pecan pie. He serves it warm. I am still searching for chocolate pie (with pudding filling and real whipping cream on top). I did see banana-cream pie at Starbucks. Again, small piece, high price. The pies that some of you made look great--apple and cherrie. Yuuum.

In my opinion:

best apple pie slice would be at "The Orphanage", 1 location is at Thonglor and the other location is at Siam Discovery Center (google it). Nice fresh tart apple slices piled high not unlike the brown mushy apple sauce type pies you commonly find elsewhere in Bangkok.

Best lemon meringue pie would be at "The Danish Bakery" located behind the Villa Supermarket on Sukhumvit just past Soi 33, they make the best minature Lemon Meringue pies where the lemon custard is not sugary sweet but has a nice tart flavor

great discovery! thanks fatfrank! everything looks good on the menu...they even have custard cow's poo thumbsup.gif Thx, the correct name should be "Mr. Jones Orphanage", great place to take the family & kids or order a slice of pie or cake to go. Best apple pie in Thailand and their cakes are pretty good/unique too.

the best tart i ever had was in the "cabin" soi yodsak, soft and tender on the outside with a nice firm pear and sweet in the middle,no custard just honey.

It would be nice if the Brits would stop insisting that the subject is British Pies. The subject is American Pies, which are very different.

I like both kinds, but how are they different? The sweet pies (apple, rhubarb, mince)are very similar in both places and the savory pies are not that different - although the Brits eat them a lot more than we do.

On the American side of the big pond "pies" are typically sweet w/ fruits (banana, cherry, apple, etc.) or pudding (e.g. chocolate pudding or vanilla pudding). The ingredients are baked inside a "pie shell." Our pie is a desert. On the British side of the big pond pies have a shell like the American pie but contain meat inside (we call their pies "chicken pot pie" or something similar). Their pie is often a main meal. But hopefully we will not be sidetracked by a debate on this. Where can you find chocolate cream pie? Banana cream pie? Lemon maraigne pie? Good apple pie and cherry pie and, and, and...........

The OP obviously was talking about desert pies..American style..since he mentioned those at Sunrise Tacos...

When I think about that style, actually, the pumpkin and apple-cinnamon pies Greg goes at Sunrise are quite good from a desert standpoint.

The tartness of the apples seems to vary from time to time, probably due to the variance in apple crops.

But the basic recipe is quite good, nicely fruity without being overly sweet or syrupy.

I'm trying to think about it... But other than Sunrise, I can't recall seeing a lot of traditional fruit pies or cream pies around these parts... Tons of cakes, tons of cheesecakes and various other deserts...

Although, the new Korean bakery in Sukhumvit Plaza at about Suk Soi 12 does an excellent, and quite expensive, pecan pie. Last time I was there, they had both small round mini-pies and the regular full-size variety. But if I recall right, the price was well well above the 600b or so prices for Sunrise fruit pies... probably because pecans are relatively expensive here.

There is an upmarket coffeeshop on Soi Phra Artit road just along from Santichaiprakarn Park. It sells cakes and fruit filled pies or tarts as you may choose to call them.

Can't remember the name I am afraid but they are all pretty good.

Alternatively the bakery place along from Witch's Tavern is pretty good for most things.

My point is there is not a lot of difference. Apple pie originated in either England or Germany, but they had it before the US. They eat desert pies too. As you mentioned, we have chicken pot pie and others of that nature, but they eat savory pies more than we do.

The best pies I have had in Thailand are at Butter is Better in Chiang Mai. They have many varieties - including the ones that you mentioned - but I like the butter crust rhubarb best.

Made this Blueberry yesterday, crust and all by scratch. Had to show it off smile.png

Also came to that conclusion Bob, have to make my own!

Fruit though can be pricey, any alternatives to the usual supermarkets?

Bei Otto on soi 20 sukhumvit has rhubarb pie, and rhubarb pie with strawberries on top, along with many other cakes and bread. Typical German bakery style, passable.

This is the Mr Jones Orphanage on Tonglor 13, also a branch on 3rd floor Discovery Siam center. The apple pie was indeed very good!
