American dies in hotel in Chiang Mai

CHIANG MAI: -- An American tourist was found dead from a suspected drug overdose in a hotel room in Chiang Mai province on Thursday, police said.

Pol Capt Jirasak Nakham, an investigator at Muang Chiang Mai police station, said the man was identified as Daniel Gibbons, aged 55.

Gibbons was found on a sofa in his room on the sixth floor of a hotel in tambon Chang Klan. He was wearing only a towel and there was a needle mark on his left arm.

Pol Capt Jirasak said a syringe and a white substance, believed to be a drug, were found in the bathroom and taken as evidence.

Police were told that Gibbons was travelling with a friend who was staying in another room. On Wednesday night his friend repeatedly knocked on the door of his room but there was no answer. He then asked hotel staff to unlock the door, who did so and found the dead man.

Gibbons' body was taken to Maharaj Nakorn Chiang Mai hospital for an autopsy. Police have asked the United States consulate in Chiang Mai to inform his relatives.

I wonder what he injected? RIP

I wonder what he injected? RIP

Could of been anything.

I wonder what he injected? RIP

My guess is heroin or some sort of methamphetamine.

I always get a little suspicious of reports like this. 55 is a little old to be dying of drugs. Most people have either succumbed long before this or learned how to manage their addiction. Maybe it was suicide? Hopefully his friend can shed some light on the subject.

RIP.

Let's all hope the TV detectives can solve this case even when there is no suspects so farcoffee1.gif

You can die at any age of drugs, just like you can die at any age of most things. You have no idea if he was an addict, a regular user, or first-time user, or indeed whether he injected what he thought he had bought. I get suspicious when there is "evidence of blows to back of head" and its declared an accident. I don't get suspicious when a 55-year old is found dead with needles and drugs.

RIP

My money is on the white substance being a particularly strong batch of Herion, especially as he is was up here in Chiang Mai.

Probably not used to the strength of it and over did it.

For speculation's sake...since the BIB haven't told us what he injected...

I reckon it was smack (heroin). The strength of H out here is way more

potent than what one gets in USA. Then again it could have also been

meth in that syringe too and his heart simply exploded. Poor dude...RIP.

Aren't we all going to be embarrassed if we find out he was a diabetic and injecting insulin, and the white powder was talc to keep his privates from wilting in the humidity.

Just in case, I'll wait for the rest of the story to come out...

Do you believe it? A 55 year old USA citizen who travel all the way to CM to have an overdose? Users like that have no money to travel.

RIP to the man. A lonely cold way to go, far from family and friends.

Diabetics don't usually inject in their arm. It's usually junkies that do that.

To deviate from the ever present speculations of drugs it could equally be possible that it was insulin and he went into diabetic shock. Perhaps not as topical but still plausible.

Maybe. But don't most junkies have more than one needle mark wherever they inject? Could be a 'skeeter bite on his arm and a ton of insulin injection sites where they'll be found later at autopsy.

I'm just saying that if this guy was my brother, I'd be a little upset that so many people have painted him a junkie before reading anything but a blurb in a newspaper with no details at all.

55 year old tourist /traveler ummm WHY at that age come all the way to a country were there are strict penalties for being in possession /taking drugs can't understand people like that.I was a heavy user of cannabis for over 25 yrs!! come 2 Thailand 11 yrs ago never smoked it since .wai2.gif

You are assuming he had family and friends, or even a home.

We don't know that.

That window between getting high and dying is always a small one when shooting.

Are you sure that you are using the word "apochryphal" correctly? It doesn't mean profound, it means dubious. That's probably why he thought that you were disagreeing with him.

Interesting response. Just wondering why the antagonism and sarcasm over my post. I like a good internet fight, but over a statement about how shooting drugs has a small window between getting high and dying? Which is true--at least to me and my sheltered existence--not that I've ever been around drugs or know anything about their effects first hand. No, that would be just evil and wrong. That must be your forte. I will go read my Book of Mormon now. I assume you are on your 5th reading of Junky by William Burroughs? Or some Jean Cocteau? Oh, you hipster you.
