Where did the Jeeps go?

Featured Replies

For years and years there were some nice pimped up old CJ Jeeps for rent all over Beach Road. I don't see them anymore these days; what happened?

I never rented one, but do kind of like them and miss them..

Removed by cityhall maybe?

Good thing they are gone.

There wasn't one single piece of Jeep/Chrysler on them, virtually completely made up/copied in a garden shed, often with totally crappy unbalanced brakes and sometimes topped of with a rather powerful Toyota 6 cylinder engine.

Not street legal, couldn't use them outside Pattaya where the cops closed an eye to them (unless they needed some beer coffee money), absolutely no insurance, so many a tourist ended up in a financial black hole after scraping some nice Beemer or Merc...

The few which were legal (at least based on an original Jeep CJ frame) are still around, but mostly privately owned, I doubt there are much left for rent...

Yeah, You didnt miss much by not renting one. They were a piece of $hit, made from old wrecked cars, could hardly drive straight.

I Made the mistake of renting one of those old jeeps. Total POS worst vehicle I have ever driven and to top it off it ran out of gas before I made it to Pataya Klang. I should have left it on second road and walked away.

Actually, the body of many was original Jeep, the undercarriage, engine, etc. had been replaced over the years with whatever was available. Then some enterprising fellow cleaned one up and that started the 'boom'. Yes, bad brakes, poor understructure are (were) common problems, but some similar 'Jeeps' are still on the road and insured.

I still see some russians and arabs riding around in them, 5+ years ago they were quite an icon for pattaya, harking back to the GI days and all, even though they are now in glitter paint instead of drab olive and oversized tires, probably say something about our population of transgendered and roidheads
