I am after watching BBC iPlayer in Thailand and look up naughty sites when i go back home.

Has anyone had experience with this?

This is a good question which I can't speak to, but has anyone used the TOR browser in Thailand? I ask this because it may serve your purpose.

If I am not mistaken, the Thor network is geared to tunnel through proxies, erected to prevent someone to reach a banned site, and applies only to the browser, while VPN encrypts the whole traffic browser or streamer (BBC iPlayer).

I used the Thor network back in Dubai, where people are kept within a safe fence from ever seeing tits or posteriors, sites for which I had a perpetual craving

UK, London works with iplayer.

The US and Danish clusters I use for Netflix.

Malaysia or Singapore to avoid stingy Thai ISPs when doing international dls.

ibVPN has worked great for me. I used it mostly for spotify and pandora but it worked fine for hulu as well. I have only tried their US servers.

I think it is about $5 a month. Cheaper if you buy for longer.

TOR works fine for it's intended purpose in Thailand, HOWEVER you need to be aware that the exit nodes located in most/all (?) European countries that I have experimented with have the exit node's IP address registered as a proxy service.

So if you think you can "pretend" that you are physically resident in Spain just because you appear to have a Domestic Spanish IP address via the TOR network you are mistaken, you will be identified as using a proxy service whose exit node just happens to be in Spain, two different things.

Likewise with many VPNs there will be the issue of your connection being shared with many other users of the same service. The typical desire for many Europeans in Thailand is to play El Gordo and Euro Lotto. When the Lotto access server accepts your login request they instantly know your IP address and user ID.

If they log 15 different login names seeming to come from the same IP address it doesn't take a genius to filter out local ISP connections from a VPN exit node and so flag all user accounts that have logged in from that IP address as suspected of being outside the country and therefore any winning ticket being void under the "resident at time of purchase" rule.

Using a point to point VPN to a known domestic user's PC in your target country is the only sure way to bypass this little niggle.

Agree with Cuban. I rent rackspace at a couple of locations, and run them as dedicated VPN endpoints. Cheaper than using a VPN service provider, you get dedicated IP addresses, use any choice of port ID, and OpenVPN is the software behind most of the commercial offerings and comes free. Absolutely rock solid and fool-proof, as far as I can tell.

anonymoX is a simple firefox plugin that will get iplayer working (if you select UK proxy, of course)
not a vpn and doesn't encrypt anything, so don't do anything you shouldn't. but is quick and free.

I bought a preloaded router from strongvpn so I wouldn't have to frustrate myself configuring my own. Yes it was more expensive, but like I said, I have never had a single issue in two years of use, and if I did, they have 24 hr support where you can allow them to come in and take over your machine and fix it remotely. It is much cheaper if you want to flash your own router, however, this little quote from the site made up my mind for me:

So, I bought the router and paid for the VPN right through strongvpn with no bullshit or complications. I am computer literate, but I also know that a computer lets you make more mistakes faster than any invention in human history (with the possible exceptions of handguns and tequila). Do yourself a favor, buy a preloaded router and a VPN account from the same company. There will be those who disagree, but then there are always those folks to contend with here. Gloom, doom, and better ideas abound on this forum. You asked for my experience and recommendation, I have given you both.

I have also found their tech support to be very good, with response to tickets usually returning in less than 30 minutes. If you are using OSX, Witopia provide a VPN app that will display a drop down menu in your menu bar that allows you to quickly connect to either their closest server (they have one in Bangkok), or else a server in any other country. If it's UK services you are interested in, they have servers in London and Manchester, both of which have always been fast for me from BKK.

Also, Witopia allows you unlimited switching between servers. StrongVPN allows you ten switches, and they you get charged an additional fee if you go post that.

The basic programme set is free, and strangely they are all of the ones that most people are interested in, BUT, unfortunately it is a Windows only programme...

I also use OSx, so watch iPlayer via the Chrome browser with the Hola add-on activated. This works very well.

I'm not an expert on VPN's. However I can confirm that UKTV is free of charge if you are happy watching just the UK terrestial channels of BBC1, BB2, ITV 1, ITV2 plus Sky News Channel. If you need access to additional channels you must register and pay 490 Baht (roughly 10 UK Pounds) per month.

The software is well designed, WYSWYG and has great program planning aps.

Give it a try before you spend your money. No contract, no cost :-)
