Ubon Hash Run 59 - Saturday 3rd August - "OutsideInn", Suriyat Road, Meuang Ubon

Ubon Hash Run 59 takes place this Saturday, 3rd August, starting from a new guest house/bar/restaurant called "OutsideInn" in Suriyat Road, Meuang Ubon. It's an area we have hashed a few times in recent years, but I couldn't resist the prospect of trying out a new place. Also, it's a good idea to be running in at least a semi-urban environment in the height of the rainy season. Don't be surprised if this one turns into a bar to bar run in that event!

OutsideInn road-tested well at lunchtime today! Tex-Mex and Thai food plus the usual beers. Should be open to serve drinks at the start and I can highly recommend the (fresh fried) tortilla chips with salsa as a bar snack. Brent, a young (to me!) American guy and Tam (? less sure I remembered her name correctly) are mein hosts - very friendly.

Meet for a pick-up at Wrong Way café (Phadaeng Road in central Ubon) at 4.00pm or go direct to the start point at 11 Suriyat Road* for a 4.30 pm prompt start. If you are going direct, then it's a good idea to look at the pictures and map on their website (url below) so you can recognise the place when you go past it. That's because they may still be waiting for their name sign to arrive. You can't fail if you find any part of Suriyat Road in Central Ubon (that's one road north of and parallel with Saphassit Road) and drive East along Suriyat across lots of junctions until you see Suriyat soi 4. Turn round, you just went past OutsideInn 20 metres before!

Hashing is social 'running' and there have been hash clubs all over the world since its 1930s origins in Kuala Lumpur. The running bit is not taken seriously and beer is drunk to oil the social side. Ubon Hash, in line with the Ubon environment is laid back and only a few enthusiasts put in a few spurts of running. The rest walk. A trail is laid, typically in white flour/chalk and the pack must find the trail, which keeps the front runners busy while the walkers catch up. After the run the beer ice-boxes are opened and the socialising begins. We usually go back for some more beer and maybe some food around town in the early evening, and some more beer later in the evening, but that is entirely optional on your part! Although hashing has been described as a 'beer drinking club with a running problem' you will find that we are not drunken lunatics and quite sociable really!

Don't be a stay at home wuss - get out there with us and discover the sides of Ubon you would not normally uncover. It's dead cheap (100B) for your first outing and inexpensive (200B) thereafter; even cheaper for Thais - and that includes several free beers afterwards, and often a beer stop during the run.

Would you be willing to give a little more info on hashing in general? How long (distance) are the courses? Is it suitable for those of us not used to running much - run a few minutes, walk a minute, etc? How much time is involved?

The Ubon hash runs are usually less than 5 km long. Not many runners if any, we walk and talk and enjoy the scenery.

It is absolutely suitable for anyone who can put one foot in front of the other. Hope you will come and join us! biggrin.png
