Tax disc and compulsory insurance

Had a car for four years and as it was on finance the finance company took care of the tax disc.

The car is now paid off and I have the blue book back, the tax sticker runs out in September, do they send a reminder or do we just pitch up with the book?

As we will be overseas for a month when it's due can I do early, and can I get a compulsory insurance certificate on, or near site, I have lost the old one.
