Govt won't back down on Amnesty Bill; security tightened

BANGKOK, July 30 – The government met urgently yesterday to map out security measures to cope with political demonstrations as Parliament reconvenes on Thursday to debate, among others, the Amnesty Bill.

Interior Minister Charupong Ruangsuwan said senior political and state officials were invited to the meeting to work on orchestrated preparations for possible violence in light of an anti-government network’s vow to stage a political rally on August 4 to protest the controversial bill.

Yesterday’s meeting, chaired by former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat, was attended by senior officials from the National Police Bureau, Interior Ministry, Defence Ministry and the Department of Special Investigation.

Mr Charupong said all related agencies were instructed to work in the same direction in maintaining public order in the capital.

The Internal Security Operation Command will be the major agency in charge of security while the Interior Ministry will support dealing with the demonstration, he said.

“The security process will range from the most lenient to the harshest measures. Law will be enforced if violence erupts,” said the interior minister.

He said he has instructed provincial governors to closely monitor the public’s activities and movement and explain to them the significance of the Amnesty Bill, sponsored by Pheu Thai MP Vorachai Hema.

The bill is tentatively scheduled for parliamentary debate on August 7.

Mr Charupong stood firm that the bill will not be withdrawn from Parliament despite protests by some quarters in society. (MCOT online news)

barefaced corruption, sickens me

They have little or no idea

"Law will be enforced if violence erupts"

You mean like May 2010? Let us refresh your memory

Isn't enforcing the law what the Democrats tried to do back in 2010?

The one in charge has lost patience. "It's now or never" as Elvis would sing.

Little Sis out of the country, just in case. Keep safe in Dubai (get some extra protection from those nice Emirati's due to the wicked Al Qaeda threat), family, in-laws, cronies and sychophants in enough key positions. All systems go!

Going to be an interesting few weeks.

Still takes the attention off the rice scheme, water management EIA, 2.2 trillion, etc

Best stock up the fridges...next week sounds like it's going to be fun whistling.gif

Does this mean the baht may eventually go down in value?

Nobody likes to spend time in a trouble zone or invest in a risky political climate.

but they did a bad job at it. Abhisit should have fired half the police force and let the other half control it before it is too late.

Still if you have the choice between one who is not up to the job or someone who is between corrupt and pure evil than I take Abhisit.

Should be anything goes if the bill is passed. After all, there surely would have to be an extension of the amnesty bill to cover THIS legitimate political protest.

I think 5 km away from it people don't even know about it.....It is maybe 1 % that is interested in politics the others don't care if Democracy or Military Dictator or if the police kills some demonstrator. ---> Unless the interrupt the Soap-Opera with some statements....

I wonder how many of them actually know whats going on.... and vote because they person beside them did -sic-

So much for reconciliation, amnesty to be rammed through and suppression of dissent on the ready.

Very valid point, although one might think the PM/Defence Minister might wish to be present at such a time.

It might be worth someone checking to see just who else is currently conveniently out of the country, just in case the sh1t hits the fan!

Thai govt won't back down on Amnesty Bill

Well of course they won't they're Thais...!! Has anyone ever heard of any government official/minister backing down on anything, regardless of how hair-brained it might be...?!

Why are we all of a sudden 'enforcing laws'? Seems rather extreme.

As much I thought she wouldn't, she will be. She flies back in "apparently" tomorrow. But then that might be a white lie.

Bring it on. It's the only way.!!!

in this case, to whitewash and maintain an oligarchy based on feudalism and nepotism. Enforcing the law is done when they are intimidated by any opposition. Regretful Abhisit was too kind on police and others who should have been enforcing the law in that instance when it was needed.

I'm not defending ANY politician here, but the fact is that far too many government officials back down on their pronouncements all the time. If that weren't the case, then maybe this country wouldn't so often be run by mass demonstrations and mobs. Mobs are paid and mobilized specifically because they DO work here, and not only individual policies and laws get changed by demonstrations, but whole governments. That's a great deal of the problem Thailand faces going forward. The difficult thing is deciding which is worse: whether the country should be ruled by mobs or by politicians with no concern for the country whatever (and apparently without enough functioning brain cells). You decide.

I got a bad feeling that the anti-government protesters are just not up to putting a wrench into the amnesty bill negotiations. They (anti-gov't protesters) appear to be all talk without any action. What a shame! This demonstration against the Pheu Thai needs to be the biggest ever to stop this government's rape of this country. I hope I am wrong, but I'm worried as I see no indications of any large protest scheduled.

So what do you think the demonstrators should do, go out there and get themselves killed?

We are told the red shirts are already in position and ready to HELP if things get out of hand, whatever out of hand means.

The police we are told in one announcement will not be armed and in another that they will be ready to use batons, teargas and no doubt will be carrying their normal side arms.

What the opposing groups should do is quietly arrange other venues to hold rallies , say 5 or 6 in other parts of the city then on the morning all get together in the alternative venues and do their thing there.

That would leave the cops, reds and Govt standing looking silly behind all their barbed wire and concrete blocks.

I wonder how many of them actually know whats going on.... and vote because they person beside them did -sic-

Wrong ! They vote for whoever offers them the most small change, to whit the Red Emperor.

IMHO (I think that means "In my humble opinion") civil war looms. There are apparently several thousand designated redshirt villages, redshirt schools, and even talk of redshirt provinces, and if this is not T,s private army I don,t know what is. All for the wish of more plunder.

It'll be the most boring civil war in world history. It will drag on for years in the courts before anybody does anything .... same old farting around. Snail's pace at doing everything, except when behind the wheel of a car, truck, bus, etc.

They have little or no idea

Bastards like these can win and will leading to strife ilke we have never seen. We dont have an army of paid peasants who can occupy the capital
