City dredges Mae Kha Canal

City workers clear weeds and rubbish out of canals that block the water flow.

The Chiang Mai Municipality has been dredging canals and clearing drains in a bid to prevent a repeat of the floods that hit Chiang Mai two years ago. Mayor Tussanai Buranupakorn led the team of engineers and city officials in investigating the Mae Kha Canal behind Centara Duangtawan Hotel recently.

City officials hope to prevent flooding from run off and the river by clearing weeds, debris and mud from the canals so as to allow water to drain quickly.

Funny how it always seems to be a mad rush to clear canals once the rains have started to fall. Perhaps with a bit of education they could get people to stop throwing 'junk' into them to start with and then maybe employ locals to keep the weeds at bay.

Never happened in the past so I dont expect it to happen any time in the future! And some of those canals are sure to be a huge health hazard....cant say Id enjoy stepping foot in any of them.
