Seems to me, from my visit yesterday, that Big C Extra (Klang) has a 42" LG Plasma on sale for B14,000.

It's definitely worth the money to get the 50 inch. A big big difference.

I bought the 50-52" LG Plasma HDTV at Makro over a year ago. It's ok but very basic. It would be a great TV for a rental. I am hoping to upgrade within the year.

I wish I could agree with this and I tried to. But I compared the pictures of plasma vs LEDs just today and the LEDs looked sharper and brighter. I looked at both LG and Panasonic plasmas.

I think people wanting to buy should compare for themselves.

lcd using LED have contrast jacked up to max, on the first glance the bright image seems more attractive than 'boring' image of Plasma display, but plasma display is more accurate than than any current lcd. Especially in show rooms, where room light is very very bright, much brighter than in normal living room in your home. in very brightly lit rooms LED lcd has advantage, say in airports. When watching movie at home, Plasma is far more film like than lcd.

Exactly...what a dork...judging a TV by how "bright" it looks in the showroom. Set any TV to its "vivid" mode and sure it will look very bright, especially an LCD TV...show about getting the staff to turn out all the lights and setting the TV to "cinema" and see which one looks better; see which one has deeper colors and darker black levels.

It's sorta a shame how inferior LCD technology has come to dominate TVs, however, sorta like vhs vs. Betamax back in the day. But that's how most dweebs judge a TV..."look honey how 'bright' that TV is...it must be a good one...let's but that one" LOLOLOL

I made an observation of what I saw on a trip to Big C Extra to pick up something else. Not just "brighter" but also "sharper."

I'm not really looking to buy, but before I eventually buy another TV to replace my LED, yep, I'll first observe what it looks like in the showroom as everyone does. That's the first step in the buying process. I don't like TVs and have gone years having no TV at all. Now, if some our TV gurus here have insights that might help prove that plasma indeed looks better under different circumstances, then that's helpful; I'm listening. Some members such as jbrain then made good suggestions for testing, and I'm glad they did--for all members looking to buy.

But just to take your word for it--no. I've seen too many supposed techies around here blowing hot air who really don't know what they're talking about.

Me, I feel quite secure about my own proven credentials, which is why I don't need to feel superior by calling regular users "dorks" and "dweebs" when doing some support for them in the internet forum. I did call one supposed tech an idiot many months ago. Well, he was just insisting on being an idiot by following a non-standard consumerist definition of a technical term to the confusion of average readers.

Thanks to everyone who contributed with advise!

As I said in the OP I would revert on what I ended up with. I won't tell anyone how much I paid, but I ended up choosing a Samsung 52" LED Smart TV from Numchai.

I went for the whole surround sound system with it, but have opted to stay with the Sony system I already had in the living room, and put the new surround sound system in a bedroom.

I did pay a great deal of attention to the lighting in store (as advised), and wasn't at all interested in what the salesman had to say, or wanted to sell me (as advised).

So, all in all I'm very happy with the model I purchased, looks, clarity, sharpness, mod cons, etc, and also the service by Numchai.

I'd also like to take this opportunity to thank all of you who contributed to this subject! As for me, I'm off to watch telly!!!

Not fair if you ask me!!

You said 42" to 50" then go and buy a 52"

lol

Please PM me the model number as I have a similar interest/need as you. Good luck on your purchase!

Model number is UA55F6400DKXXT, Version TS01. Apologies for my previously incorrect info, I was seriously considering a 52" model, but as you've probably guessed from the model number it's actually 55"!!

Also, as well as the obvious mod cons, it's also 3D (although until movie quality improves not really much of an advantage). 4 x HDMI sockets, 3 x USB sockets, a LAN socket, as well as the standard AV!

Hope this helps you, also, I mentiond earlier that I wouldn't go into cost, but if you're interested Bob I paid approx 45,000 Baht. With a bit of luck you can get a better deal for the same or something similar!

Sorry PH, you know what it's like, set yourself a size and budget and throw both out of the window when your actually in the store!

Luckily, purely because of the price tag I didn't go for the 75" model (forget what brand, or whether it was plasma or LED/LCD) that was on display. Very nice, great picture, but at approx 150,000 Baht I couldn't possibly pay that amount to watch Liverpool FC get beat on!! lol

3D is dead...there will be little if any further 3D content released and in a year or two, likely no TV's with this feature. It was a gimic in the fifties and like then, it didn't catch on this time either.

If you like this feature, maybe your TV has 2D to 3D "upscaling."

Prices must have come down a lot recently, because only 6 months ago a 75" would fetch almost double of that.

To continue on the picture quality in the stores, I don't know if anyone has noticed yet that in the settings menu there is a "Mode " setting, where you can choose beween Home use and ": store mode " smile.png

I usually go to Numchai on Sukhumvit and have done for years ,called in the other day ,good as usuall ,but tried powerbuy ,the new one next door to Foodland and they have a great sale on ,we had already decided on a Samsung and got a led 40inch with a good discount (there were larger sets discounted as well) picture is great ,

ps ,one of the reasons we chose Samsung is they have a very good service dept here in Pattaya

And you will need it! My friend ownes a dozen rental condos and fitted me out with Samsung LCD TVs and front loading washers. Has had to take several of both of them in for expensive repairs over the years. My own 8 year old Sony LCD tv and my Pano plasma tv have never had a problem and are still going strong.

Korean brand appliances and electronics are cheap because they are cheaply made...inferior components, manufacturing, and technology as well. You get what you pay for.

Very true, Samsung has a very good service dept because it's so busy with faulty products.

I needed to use it once with a faulty tv i had and when i arrived there the place was packed

with customers and needed to take a queue ticket and wait for 1 hour before being served.

Never again, i will buy a Samsung product!

There's always a rotten apple in the basket! Obviously I'm implying and referring to electrical goods in this instance!!!

Sony is dead & Samsung is alive & well. They were determined to be the GE of Asia & they have succeeded. Excellent products all round.

I wouldn't say excellent products, more like cheaper value products compared to

their competitors, that's why their service department is so busy.

The japanese companies like Panasonic, Sony and Pioneer are still the leaders

when it comes to high quality TV's and home theatre appliances.

Obviously, with higher quality comes a higher price, and a longer service life.

The leaders? That is a big question mark. My old Sony triniton was one of my best TV's ever. Those days are long gone. Sony TV division hasn't made a profit in 5years and the rumor is they will leave the business. Many Sonys are now made in China, Mexico, Brazil and Malaysia. Your new Sony Bravia that you buy at Numchai was probably manufactured in Malaysia with the LCD screen coming from Korea. The Sony of yesterday was like the Apple of today with innovative, quality products. We can only reminisce.

I'm probably mistaken here, but the only TV's that are actually manufactured by their labels are LG & Hitachi (if I'm not mistaken), all others are being built for the other brands by for aforesaid. I may have one of the names wrong (but don't think so), but I'm sure LG are the main player!!!

Had Samsung for 5 years and not a sniff of a problem.

Also bought a TCL, on a wing and prayer, 4 years ago and that has been trouble free.

Hitachi left the television business last year. LG and Samsung manufacture lcd's for many companies including the Japanese. It is the Koreans who have surpassed the Japanese as being the innovators and industry leaders. Who knows, 10 years from now the torch maybe passed to the Chinese? The point is you purchased a product from an industry leader known for their state of the art technology.
