April 11, 200620 yr Helmet-to-helmet collisions on a football field register about 100 Gs, according to UPMC research, about 1.5 times as many as the 60 to 70 Gs exerted in a car crash on a person wearing a seat belt and traveling about 35 mph. But shots to the head can be dangerous, even deadly, especially over time. Ex-Steeler Terry Long died June 7 from a brain inflammation that resulted, in part, from repeated blows to the head during his eight-year NFL playing career, Allegheny County Coroner Cyril Wecht said Tuesday. As many as 40 high school athletes nationwide have died during the past several years from repeated concussions, said neuropsychologist Michael Collins, assistant director of UPMC's Sports Medicine Concussion Program. Deaths are rare, but other problems aren't, Collins said. Concussions result from blows to the head or upper body, jostling the brain inside the skull -- much like an egg yolk inside its shell. The injury can cause loss of consciousness, disorientation, confusion, dizziness and headaches. Not treated properly, concussions -- especially repetitive concussions -- can lead to prolonged memory loss and slowed mental processing. _______________________________________________________________________ American football is so violent, even with protective gear, that players from the high school level all the way up to the pros die on occasion. Edited April 11, 200620 yr by Tippaporn
April 11, 200620 yr Pussies? Not to mention a lot of those guys (receivers, tail-backs, running backs, safeties, ect) are also a step short of being world-class sprinters. I personally don't like American football because of the way the game is played. I'd rather watch Canadian football. If they used Canadian rules in American football, it would make for a much more exciting game. But then, I'd rather watch an ordinary, meaningless American football game, than a championship soccer game Then again, there's lots more excitement watching paint dry, or grass grow, than your usual soccer game.
April 11, 200620 yr Couldn't Jonah Lomu in his prime run 100M in around the 13 second mark? I fully agree. American Football and all that padding is for big girls blouses!
April 11, 200620 yr Author Couldn't Jonah Lomu in his prime run 100M in around the 13 second mark?I fully agree. American Football and all that padding is for big girls blouses! He could run it under 11 seconds. His 0 - full-tit in three strides is what made him dangerous though.
April 11, 200620 yr I concur. In comparison to Rugby, American SOCCER players are a bunch of Girlies. I bet when they take off their padding and their Bubble Wrap, they're about 7 stone
April 11, 200620 yr American football players are just a bunch of pussy fat boys. And i am still waiting for an explanation on why the need for a defensive team an attacking team and a kicking team and a wipe your ass team. Are they too stupid that they cant perform more than one task at a time?

April 11, 200620 yr Author Don't get me started on that NH showcase called the Heineken Cup...you know the one where you have to buy all the SH rejects to make up the numbers.
April 11, 200620 yr Well, I did provide some overwhelming facts and other supporting evidence to support the claim that American football is a much more intense and violent game than the game of rugsbie played by kids in other parts of the world. This should have been sufficient enough to illicit concessions from guys who have never seeen true athletes. But I'm afraid that for some guys out there who would like to portray themselves as macho they just don't want to admit that they grew up playing with a bunch of girls. Boys, take the loss of this argument on the chin like good boys and girls. There's really no need to cry. Edited April 11, 200620 yr by Tippaporn

April 11, 200620 yr Do American players cut their nails...........................Oh no, they musn't do, that's why they wear gloves. It protects them from breaking their nails and also from their opponents getting scratched and hurt and running off the field in floods of tears
April 11, 200620 yr American football players never cry, even when injured. They'll still play with broken limbs and dislocated shoulders. "Tape me up, coach, and send me back out." Stand up tip i cant hear you properly, now i tell you i havent heard so much arse in all my time. In the uk rugby is only played between around October and April, so the worst months. I have been on a pitch in January where it was so cold the studs wouldnt go into the pitch because it was frozen. Did we still play? Of course we <deleted> did. Do rugby players play with injuries? Well i certainly used too, i have played with a broken nose, a cut above my eye and a broken collar bone to name a few. Obviously not all at the same time. And this was only county level rugby i was playing. Your american boys are just a fat bunch of wussies that cant play rugby, just look at your national team to see how well you do. If you lot took off the padding all you have is pudding Do you have world series of rugby in the usa? You know the world series where the only teams that take part are american Someone needs to explain to you boys the meaning of world, i think
April 11, 200620 yr Nice one Daleyboy Talking about toughies though. The baddest, meanest toughies i have ever come across are the Field Gun Crews. Man, they are crazy Mother fokkers
April 11, 200620 yr Rugby by far is more violent than yank football, what makes matters worse some of those lads are completely mental. (kicked in the head too many times I surmise) However that being said I certainly wouldnt want to fk with any of those yanks either even in their girly pads.

You want to know about tough?I know of heaps of people that have played on with broken bones, but the best story is about a Kiwi guy called Buck Shelford.Probably about 15 years ago. He was kicked in the groin(No cup protection..) by a French player 5 mins into the game.He finally came off the field after playing for 60 mins (Games go on for 80 mins...in case you didn't know. ) His scrotum was ripped open . BTW, that was amature rugby...non-professional at the time. They played for the love of the game.
April 11, 200620 yr nice try Tippaporn , but no cigar. Jeez, chuch, I'm fighting you, Dale, mrbojangles, markuk, the Prof - all by my lonesome. And I still have one hand tied behind my back. Not quite a cigar, but close. Edited April 11, 200620 yr by Tippaporn

Us rugby players have balls so big you couldnt get them in a cup Have you ever played with a broken bone tip? When i broke my collar bone i carried on and played the last 20 minutes before having my shirt cut off me because i could lift my arm, when they x rayed me i was told i had snapped my collar bone in 3 seperate places, and to this day i still have problems on cold days with my shoulder. BTW this all happened when i was 16. The split over my eye was as a result of getting a boot in the face for lying on the worng side, that was only 3 stiches, off had it stiched then back on. The only injury that took me out of the game completely was my broken nose, and that was because i couldnt see <deleted> all for the blood in my eyes. As for me dishing out injuries, well lets just say there was more than the odd flying arm out the back of the scrum and later when i moved to second row te odd finger up the opposition hookers nose Pad me up any tme and i would get on the pitch with any of those pussies. They have <deleted> shoulders like half the cast members from dallas or dynasty
April 11, 200620 yr "If I had a choice, I'd sooner go one-on-one with a grizzly bear. I pray that I can get up every time Butkus hits me." former NFL running back MacArthur Lane He was a grunting, snarling, snorting defensive machine, dedicated to the creation of football mayhem and the destruction of offensive game plans. Dick Butkus' road to the Hall of Fame was paved with blood, sweat, pain -- and the intense anger that coursed through the veins of the most celebrated middle linebackers. The 6-3, 245-pound Butkus served as the Chicago Bears defensive leader and enforcer from 1965 to '73, when the almost-constant physical pounding finally took its toll on a body that had been pushed to full throttle on every play. He was both loved and hated for the mean, take-no-prisoners style he brought to the field, but his success was fueled by a consuming drive to be the best and a relentless dedication to his profession. The burly, blue-collar Butkus combined surprising speed with a fearsome strength that he used to fight off powerful blockers. A ballcarrier who fell into the grasp of his long, thick arms could expect to be squeezed into helpless submission. Other runners and offensive linemen were constantly amazed by the ferocity of his hits. Butkus could run down ballcarriers from sideline-to-sideline, cover receivers out of the backfield and make the right calls for coach George Halas' complicated defense. Forced retirement due to blown out knees after seven seasons. _____________________________________________________ NFL Legend Dan Hampton Hall of Fame defensive lineman Dan Hampton was a menacing, yet versatile, defender, who served 12 seasons defending the line of scrimmage for the Chicago Bears. Hampton was a first-round draft pick of the Chicago Bears in 1979. An outstanding and versatile defensive lineman, Hampton would play 12 seasons with the Bears. Six times he earned first- or second-team All-Pro honors as either a defensive tackle or defensive end. Nicknamed “Danimal” for his ferocious style of play, Hampton persevered through 10 knee surgeries and numerous other injuries as he became recognized as one of the game’s most dedicated players. _____________________________________________________ Modern day gladiators. Arnold Mandell: "Football is not a game but a religion, a metaphysical island of fundamental truth in a highly verbalized, disguised society, a throwback of 30,000 generations of anthropological time." Doug Plank: "Most football teams are temperamental. That's 90% temper and 10% mental." Reggie Williams, when asked his greatest strengths as a football player : "Speed, strength, and the inability to register pain immediately." Duffy Daugherty: "Football isn't a contact sport, it's a collision sport. Rugby is a contact sport." Ray Lewis: "Pain is only temporary, no matter how long it lasts." Chad Bratzke, explaining life in the NFL: "The pads don't keep you from getting hurt. They just keep you from getting killed."
