Kindle and Thai ebooks

Featured Replies

Anyone know if my Kindle purchased here in the states will work in Thailand reading Thai language ebooks?

I'd love to know where I can download Thai language translations of popular novels. I have a spare Nook and the Thai GF is an avid reader but I can't find any Thai downloads for her.

I read recently that Amazon are spreading the Kindle programme to 170 countries worldwide. I've lost the link though. The sooner the better.

Obviously it can display Thai script in pdf ok. After that you have problems. On ebooks it tends to misplace tone markers and vowels, that certainly was the case with earlier kindles.

On the other points, I think you would struggle to find much available in Thai in epub or mobi format. The Thai market for it would be very small I would imagine....

I bought a Kindle here in Bangkok, it was clearly in US packaging so almost certainly identical to the ones available in the US.

While I have never tried to use mine for Thai script, I know they can be used to read books in Thai script in the mobi format and not just as pdf.

I know this because the models on display that I played with before I bought mine had books in Thai and books in English, both able to be read , in mobi format, and without needing to do anything to switch between but select the book.

So they can display both languages just by going from one book to another. I can read a few Thai words only, so no expert but the script on the display looked "normal" to me, for what that's worth.

Kindles are sold at major B2S stores in Bangkok, and they may be able to help you with downloading Thai language books, if and when you get here.
