Jai Dee
Suvarnabhumi Airport will pick the private sector to operate express bus services to central Bangkok The Cabinet yesterday opted to grant a concession to the private sector to operate express bus service between Suvarnabhumi Airport and Bangkok. According to the Government Spokesman's Office, although the service should have been the responsibility of the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority, the Cabinet viewed that BMTA was not ready to provide the service. The meeting entrusted the Suvarnabhumi Airport Development Committee to set up a selection committee chaired by the Director General of the Land Transport Department. The latter panel will select transport entrepreneurs and types of buses to be used in the service which will consist of four routes. The service, to be called Airport Express (AE), will ply between Suvarnabhumi and four destinations in Silom, Witthayu, Bang Lamphu (บางลำพู), and Hua Lamphong (หัวลำโพง) Railway Station. The Cabinet has also set as a guideline that AE buses must be new and equipped with standard facilities, space for luggage, and the closed-circuit television system. Prospective entrepreneurs to operate the service must have recognized capability in the field. Just another face saving ploy in light of no real official transport mode from that god forsaken wilderness. I wonder how much it will cost the "Prospective entrepreneurs" to gain the contract? Another question springs to mind......Exactly what route will these new buses plan to take? The as yet unfinished expressway, or the gridlocked lower roads. The most importany question is, yep you guessed it....HOW LONG WILL IT TAKE??

britmaveric
Oh well they have a time to sort things out - hopefully when the airport does finally open it won't be a disaster trying to get transport out.
astral
And why was this not planned in advance? It is just being announced, but in theory the airport should already be open........... and they have only just woken up to the lack of transport. Will the company that gets the contract take another year to purchase the requisite number of vehicles, hire and train the necessary staff? Thailand really has become a joke.
