Trang Airport closed for second day

TRANG: -- Trang Airport remained closed for a second day yesterday after Wednesday's Tuesday's runway mishap involving a Nok Air flight.

Heavy rain hampered officials' efforts to remove the Boeing 737-800, which slid off a runway and became stuck in mud. Workers used three tow-trucks to try to pull the plane free, but only succeeded in sinking the aircraft's front wheel deeper into the mud.

Hence they had to remove all the jet fuel to lighten the aircraft and place a metal sheet under the wheel so it could be pulled out.

All Nok Air flights servicing the airport have been diverted to Nakhon Si Thammarat Airport, while AirAsia flights have shifted to Krabi Airport. Vans were on hand at Trang Airport to give passengers a free lift to the above-mentioned airports.

Airport director Thaworn Saeng-ampai initially said the Trang facility should resume services last night, but Civil Aviation Department director-general Woradet Hanprasert later announced that the airport would resume services this morning.

Trang Chamber of Commerce president Salil Totabtiang said travellers and tourists were affected by the incident, especially those planning for the holiday weekend of August 10-12. He said the airport was trying to solve the problem so that flights could resume in the evening.

Seafood operators were also affected but had shifted to using other nearby airports to send their products to customers, although that meant higher transport costs, longer transport times and possible adverse effects on product freshness.

Saying he planned to hold discussions with affected business operators, Salil urged relevant agencies and all involved parties to find measures to prevent a recurrence of the incident, pointing out that commercial aviation traffic would only increase in future.

Bangkok-bound flight DD7411 slid off the runway while preparing for takeoff in heavy rain on Tuesday evening.

The 142 people on board escaped with no injuries.

Cue the TV brigade on how it would have been better handled in the west or that they could do better.....

Good news - the very low speed train is still operating. Bangkok to Trang in only 15 hours, IF you take the express AND it arrives on time (unlikely).

Civil Aviation Department: Trang International Airport reopened early today; Nok Air recovers aircraft which skidded from runway Tuesday /MCOT

Cue the TV brigade on how it would have been better handled in the west or that they could do better.....

Thailand is member of the ICAO. So the airport in Trang should conform with the ICAO DOC 9157 AERODROME DESIGN MANUAL.

This allows an aircraft gear to sink in max 15 cm on the strips adjacent to the runway. There should be no "mud" next to runway and taxiways. The 15 cm are intended for decelerating purposes and are the max allowed depth without causing damage to the gear.

And yes, I consider the captain's action rather unusual. V1 should allow for enough remaining runway to bring the aircraft to a stop even when the surface is contaminated.

Trang Airport reopens after three-day closure due to stuck plane

Trang Airport reopened Friday after a three-day closure caused by a Boeing 737 aircraft that became stuck in the mud near the runway.

Removing the aircraft took longer than expected because we didn’t have the right equipment," Trang Airport director Thaworn Saengamphai told Thai TV PBS.

The airport, 600 kilometres south of Bangkok, was closed Tuesday evening after a Nok Air plane carrying 142 passengers and crews kidded off the runway during take-off in a heavy rainstorm. No one was injured in the incident.

The aircraft, whose wheels had sunk 70 centimetres into the mud, was removed Thursday night after Thai Airways International, the main shareholder in low-cost airline Nok Air, provided the airport with a crane and other equipment.

Trang is the closest airport to Lantao island and Satun province, which has several islands that are popular among tourists.
