BANGKOK, Aug 9 -- Prime Minister Yingluck Shinawatra late yesterday signed an order to revoke enforcement of the Internal Security Act (ISA) in three Bangkok districts effective today, one day ahead of the original final day of enforcement tomorrow.

Suranand Vejjajiva, secretary general to the prime minister, said Ms Yingluck signed the order to scrap enforcement of the ISA as proposed by national police chief Adul Saengsingkaew, in his capacity as director of the Centre for the Administration of Peace and Order (CAPO).

The order, already published in the Royal Gazette, took effect as CAPO's evaluation concluded that the public safety situation has returned to normal.

All roads to Parliament and Government House have been reopened to traffic as normal since yesterday evening.

The cabinet earlier invoked the ISA in three politically sensitive Bangkok districts--Dusit, Phra Nakhon and Pomprab Satru Phai--during August 1-10 to prevent potential political disorder in areas around Government House and Parliament during the debate on the amnesty bill.

Parliament on Thursday approved the first reading of the controversial amnesty bill with an overwhelming 300-124 vote in the house dominated by the ruling Pheu Thai party, paving the way to grant amnesty for those involved in political violence from 2006 to 2011.

Gen Adul said police would continue monitoring the rally of the People’s Army against the Thaksin Regime (PATR) at Lumpini Park and said the protesters could continue their activity as long as they do not violate the law.

PATR core leader Thaikorn Polsuwan said several groups of anti-Thaksin activists have shown their intention to continue the rally and many said they would join the demonstration on an individual basis.

He said the amnesty bill was passed in the Lower House by the majority of government coalition MPs who gagged the opposition.

“We can no longer trust Parliament to deliberate the amnesty bill,” he said.

PATR protesters continued their rally at Lumpini Park last night and they have yet to decide if they would move to a new site after the ISA is revoked.

Pongniwat Yuthapanboriparn, attorney general of criminal cases, said he received a police request to revoke bail for PATR members Thaikorn Polsuwan and Pichet Pattanachote who were earlier charged with intruding Suvarnabhumi and Don Mueang airports and were released on bail.

He said the attorney general would look into the police documents and action might be taken next week. (MCOT online news)

Gagged? Odd, I could swear I saw the Democrats and other opposition parties speak during the debate.

...just a ploy ....no sincerity in any act..........all calculated....

How many sound bites this week to show you she is here and actually doing something. Go back to Paris and shop. It's all BS.

Isnt Jatuporn out on bail also and not supposed to take part in any political activity?

Sure I saw reports of him giving out instructions to the reds

How about a police request to have his bail revoked....again

The whole thing was just a farce. The Government knew that the opposition would not resort to red shirt terrorist tactics and the red shirts would not do it either. The only time they will is if Thaksin gets denied an amnesty.

In affect it was just a ploy to try to trick people into thinking they were doing some thing.

Glad to hear the Pm is getting involved. Finally!

Isn't that sweet! Our heroine of democracy takes time from her busy schedule and cancels a draconian suppression act a day early, with never a suggestion as to why it was necessary in the first place.

How long before it is re-instituted? How long before it becomes necessarily a permanent feature of this government?

BTW red shirts in police uniform "helping to protect the government" ? Will that see someone's bail revoked, and additional charges laid (including the person who authorised the uniform), or is PTP's private militia about to become legitimised, authorised and issued with government weapons? Is this what Jboy means by a proto-fascist?

Glad to hear the Pm is getting involved. Finally!

You appear to be in some difficulty in recognising who the REAL PM is. biggrin.png

Is she back from her trip on the big choo choo train?
