Dental Implants -- Recommendations?

I would appreciate any recommendations for dentists who do good work performing implants.

I'm looking for value for money, professionalism, and comfort.

There are so many to choose from. Which are the best?

I am in the same situation as you. I was at a dentist on Central Pattaya Rd yesterday where a lot of dentists are located and had my teeth cleaned.

I was quoted 47k bath pr tooth which I find too expensive.

I suspect that the prices are higher here due to many tourists and older expats.

I will check the prices in the very good private hospital in Sri Racha (forgot the name) and since I have a truck not really a problem.

The guy who does these at Pattaya International Hosp seems to be quite good. Trained overseas, UK I believe.

PhyaThai hospital. They have quite a big dental section there. My first implant by them is finished and the second is just waiting for the crown.

The implant prices there always seem to be "on offer" at 40K, which includes the crown and everything apart from antibiotics/pain-killers (which seem to be very expensive there - though this seems to be common with all private clinics) and an incredibly irritating "hospital fee" of about 300-400B. God alone knows what that is for. Their billing system is bizarre to say the least, but the price does seem to work out right in the end (apart from that irritating extra).

They speak enough English for my needs and I found the service to be professional.

Interestingly, more than one specialist implant dentist in Pattaya told me those two implants could not be done. PhyaThai didnt seem to find them difficult, though one did require a bone graft which cost an extra 8K or so over the implant price. This was pointed out to me in full before the procedure started.

It might be more helpful if a recommendation included an idea of the prices charged, especially for services that often attract a standard charge like implants and scaling.

I would think each patient is different and to get a proper quotation the dentist must do an examination. I would be suspicious of any dentist or his staff giving prices without an exam.

I had my two implants done (along with loads of crowns and root fillings) at the Samitivej Hospital in Sriracha over several years. My dentist was Dr Orawan (that's her given name). One implant was very complicated, right at the back, and needed a synthetic bone transplant as there wasn't enough jaw to support the implant depth. They brought in a specialist from Bangkok to do the work. All was fine. Never had such good work done on my teeth. My teeth were ruined by the NHS in the UK. But they are in great condition now. The whole set!

I thoroughly recommend the Samitivej. Spotlessly clean. It was very cheap too (same price as the Thais paid) when I had the work done but it's got a lot more expensive now as they seem to be charging farangs extra. But if you want a good job, I rate it first class.

I really can't remember. My treatment at the hospital finished several years ago now and it was over a 4 or 5 year period. I have the receipts somewhere but it would take an earth mover to locate them I feel. Besides I know prices have hiked for farangs recently. Also, I paid for treatment on a visit basis and the bills added up slowly rather than pay upfront an agreed sum for treatment. And it depends on how complicated the implant is. If the dentist can insert an implant directly into the hole made when extracting the old tooth then it's going to be a lot cheaper than than getting a specialist down from Bangkok to put in a bone graft.

Sorry I can't help you further. The best bet, as previous posters have suggested, is to get an appraisal and a quote. And I suggest you get a firm quote that the dentist will stick too. My payment system tended to, in later treatment, to run away with the costs. But the treatment was good. And I'm a very happy customer.

Of course one would expect to be examined before receiving a quote. I certainly was though it was a very brief examination and an xray.

But even so for most common procedures (implants, scaling, crowns) most dentists here seem to have a set price. Dentists in Europe do too. This price may vary if extra work is needed (like bone grafts for some implants, as I had) but even then the extra costs will be pre-determined and standard. I was told 8KB per bottle of bone, and that they expected to use one or maybe two. In the end it was one.

I have found that root canals do always have a sliding scale, depending on the number of roots and the location of the tooth.

Other jobs are more individual and so prices will vary accordingly.

That's exactly what I had, but at PhyaThai the dentist who did all my implant work was a specialist implantologist who does only implants. I would never settle for less now.

As a dentist, I want to say don't forget to use reliable implants as well. Sometimes, for one or another reason, you have to remove the prosthodontics on the implant and if you (and your dentist) choosed to use a no name implant to save those extra 1000 baht you may be standing there with a useless implant, as there's no way to apply a new crown/bridge on it. Trust me, I've seen patients who installed implants i Estonia, Pakistan, France, Romania with fully functional implants (but with broken prosthodontics) and there's no way to use the implants as the patients don't know who installed it and the implant system used is more or less unknown (and might have closed down business).

In Sweden the three biggest producers of implants are Dentsply, Nobel Biocare and Straumann. Those fixtures (the implant "screw") will not fracture, a very uncommon complication but it happens some times with no name implant fixtures. Here, any dentist used to implantprosthodontics, will have zero trouble working with the big three. They have been around for decades and spare parts will remain in stock for years to come.

I'm getting one at SMile Dental Clinic on SOuth Rd nearest to Soi Bua Khao.

The first place I went said my bone was narrow as the tooth has been gone 30+ years. He said no problem, use a smaller implant. Well, it is a bottom molar so I want a full size post.

The Smile place first did a panoramic X-ray, 400 baht. It was very modern, I stood up and put my chin on a rest and the machine hummed and rotated around my head. I remember having to bite on some hard plastic for x-rays long ago.

The dentist is Dr. Chris, speaks ok English. He explained the procedure. He cuts a flap of gum without removing any. Stays to the outer side to avoid tongue and blood vessels. My narrow bone requires some bone to be added. It is freeze-dried horse bone, ground up into a paste. The bone is 7000 baht. The implant with crown is 47000, Healing time of the implant depends on the growth and hardness of my bone so he won't know how long until he drills. It all makes sense to me. He also spotted something on the x-ray that I had seen. Under a filling I have a gap, We both think that should be filled in solid. I go next week.

Also, this is the same place that Dr. Gai did my root canal/crown over a year ago. No problems, knock wood.

What percentage of the cost is the implant "screw" itself ?

I was quoted 210,000 baht for 2 implants and 4 front lower teeth , but using USA implant screw ,

This was in Bangkok and it did seem pretty high to me !

Well I had this done yesterday at 3PM, I was home by 4. Absolutely no pain during or after. He explained each step. The drill was easier than a filling. I highly recommend Dr. Kris.

I took a nervous friend here 3 weeks ago. The procedure was painless. The cost of the implant and follow up exam was 28000 as performed by their specialist. Dr. Thappasit will do the crown next. The costs can vary based on the crown chosen.

Only if you need it for cosmetic reasons. My implants were at the back of my mouth and not visible and so I needed nothing.

That price seems very high for just an implant. In Europe I was quoted about 125KBaht by a top implantologist.

In Pattaya the implants seems to cost app 40K baht.

That price is often "from" and may not include all the extras (crown, xrays etc). Personally I would not even think about having an implant done by anything other than a specialist who does only that. Few clinics in Pattaya seem to have such personnel.

I am still checking around as it seems like I will need something like 5-6 implants due to heavy smoking for many years.

I would still wholeheartedly recommend PhyaThai SiRacha for this, especially if they are still doing them for 40KBaht.
