Senior Democrats to join street rallies

BANGKOK: -- KEY DEMOCRAT PARTY figures have been given the green light by the party leader to join the street rallies against the government as well as the so-called "Thaksin regime".

In an interview with the Blue Sky TV Channel yesterday, opposition Democrat Party leader Abhisit Vejjajiva said the People's Army rally against "Thaksin's regime" is being held lawfully as they wanted to make social changes.

"So, it's good if we can support them," he said, referring to Democrat leaders who took to the People's Army stage in Lumpini Park on Sunday.

He said Democrat MP Nipit Intarasombat had also met leaders of the anti-government People's Alliance for Democracy (PAD) last week to discuss the political situation. "Their opinions might be different from ours, but at least parties who disagree with this government are joining forces."

Leaders from the Democrat Party and PAD would also discuss the amnesty bill and moves to amend the Constitution, he said.

On Facebook, former finance minister Korn Chatikavanij said that after receiving messages from MP friends, he agreed to join the rally at Lumpini Park on Sunday. "A reporter asked me what I thought about Democrats joining hands with PAD. I said it was good, as such discussions are good for society,"

Korn's Facebook post said. "We should speak to all parties. I have talked with red-shirt people and discovered that many have similar viewpoints to ours. Thais may have different colours, but we are the same."

Apart from the party big wigs, Democrat part-list MPs Kalaya Sophonpanich and Kasit Piromya also joined the rally on Sunday.

It is good to see democrat senior members joining the great unwashed , be certain you don't give that mob of spiffs at PTP any excuse to bring in the DSI, as we all know, DSI is very busy with the luxury car import saga and charges are likely in the next fifty years, so to further involve the DSI in any charges from street protests, is just an excuse for the PTP to hinder true democracy , by sowing up the Democrat leaders (Abhisit) time in the courts on frivolous charges, this would be a disadvantage to the due process of government, just what the PTP want.coffee1.gif
