Banharn does not reveal whether he will return to politics when ban ends

BANGKOK, 20 August 2013 (NNT) – Former Prime Minister Banharn Silpa-archa on Monday celebrated his 81st birthday anniversary at his house in Charansanitwong, Bangkok amidst a large crowd of well-wishers from the political circle.

Mr. Banharn, who currently holds the position of Chartthaipattana Party chief advisor, received guests such as former prime minister Somchai Wongsawat, Phuea Thai Party Leader Charuphong Ruangsuwan, and former minister Sudarat Keyuraphan.

Mr. Banharn indicated at his birthday party that he has accepted the invitation to join the political reform discussions being spearheaded by the current administration because there is turmoil within the nation and it was time for all parties to help foster stability. He said that after the first meeting, slated for August 25, he will hold talks with leaders of the People’s Alliance for Democracy and the opposition parties, adding that he can carry out this initiative without waiting for his 5-year ban from politics to be over on December 2.

Asked whether he would return to politics after the ban ended, Mr. Banhard said he could not yet answer that question at the moment.

So it would seem that being an advisor to a political party and taking part in political reform discussions is not considered to be taking part in politics, something he has been banned from doing for 5 years.

Exactly but everything here is flexible for those and such as those.

He won't exactly be returning as he's never been away and he's just what Thai politics need, another dinosaur.

Quite interesting really, the bad state of Thai politics....an 80 odd year old pollie still under a ban for bad behaviour....where else would this occur?

Would you like to state what that bad behaviour actally was? or do you not know?

Banharn Silpa-archa aka 'slippery eel', was involved in a few corruption cases, nothing new there.

However his biggest faux pas was referring to H.M. Queen Elizabeth II, here on a state visit,as "Queen Elizabeth Taylor".

Not actual bad behavior but consider the sauce.

This corrupt dinosaur has never been far away from the trough, I think he has a family proxy representing him in parliment anyhow. Sadly, until the raft of political dinosaurs dies out, nothing much will change.

But they don't die out. They just get replaced with another family member ... sad but true ... Barnharn is just one of many ... he and his party have been in every government since they began .... slippery eel is his nickname .. very apt :)

Where else would an 80 year old still be involved in politics ?

As it clear from Ratcatcher's comment that in fact he already was a senile old man many years ago.
