tolsti
from another website ''Suspected fire in hold'' not a lot of other info at this time.
cdnvic
I wouldn't panic over that last statement. Even a tiny wisp of smoke from a blown fuse or similar can set off the smoke sensors. Very rare that it would be an actual fire. Still, best to play it safe. cv

Ollie
This seems to be another in a number of recent glitches on a variety of routes that has affected BA. Methinks there is something not quite right there at the moment?
taxexile
alls well that ends well. Fire scare strands BA jumbo jet on runway(Filed: 17/04/2006) Hundreds of passengers on a British Airways jumbo jet to London were diverted to a small airport in the former Soviet republic of Kazakhstan in an emergency scare at the weekend. But after they landed safely, and a fire warning was discovered to be a false alarm, the passengers were told the Boeing 747 could not take off from Uralsk's "unsuitable" runway as it was too heavy. Three smaller aircraft were despatched to ferry the 354 people on board to London. But they faced another problem. Because there were no suitable steps, the passengers left the 747 by climbing on to the top of a tall airport vehicle and then on to a stairway alongside. The passengers were eventually taken to London, one group arriving on Saturday night, the other two landing early yesterday. The flight had started in Sydney with a stop in Bangkok A BA spokesman said: "We apologise to our customers for the inconvenience, but safety and security are our top priorities and will not be compromised." from the uk daily telegraph. Boeing 747 could not take off from Uralsk's "unsuitable" runway as it was too heavy. then how will they get the old bird home ?? lopburi3
I suspect it will be much lighter without the pax and luggage. And they can sell some of the fuel and make it even less heavy.
george
Update: 747 Landing Causes Upset in Kazakhstan ALMATY, Kazakhstan: -- A British Airways passenger jet has made a safe emergency landing at an airport in Kazakhstan because of a false fire alarm, officials said Sunday. The Boeing 747 had been en route to London from Sydney, with a Bangkok stop, when a fire warning light went on in the cockpit Saturday. The crew requested an emergency landing at the airport of Uralsk, a city in northern Kazakhstan near the border with Russia, the Kazakhstan Emergency Situations Ministry said in a statement Sunday. There were 354 passengers and 18 crew members on board. After landing, the crew found that the alarm was false, but the plane was unable to take off from Uralsk because of its heavy weight, and British Airways had to send three smaller aircraft to ferry the passengers to London. Because the airport lacked stairs tall enough to reach the plane, passengers debarked by stepping onto the top of a tall airport vehicle and then on to a stairway, Britain's Press Association news agency reported, quoting a British Airways spokeswoman. The jet also was carrying a cargo of bees, but despite reports they had caused the emergency by setting off the fire sensors, the spokeswoman said the bees were found still in their original packing, the Press Association said. All passengers have safely arrived in London. -- AP / themoscowtimes.com 2006-04-
