RubbaJohnny
If the hole melts thru the earth China Syndrome like it'll come out off Rio,handy to transfer the Olypic torch Seriously the lack of external scrutiny and investigative journalism is appalling. The lack off understanding of ionising radiation in Japan is also disappointing considering fundamental medical studies used the Hiroshima and nagasaki victims as case studies. Talk of transporting stuff even by robots as yet unbuilt still ignores where to store it until tolerable levels met. This should finally put the nail in coffin of fission fuel yet UK is palnning new ones Heaven forfend EGAT in a country where 19th century train technolgy which is a Roman Rd ,some 19th century iron and a flag system is all that is required. Wonder if TEPCO will be calling on the Thai nuclear accident expertise. What wonderful free simulation,or will they practice in the floods. In a country that cannot cope with non ionising liquids. Anyone know how many EGAT specialists out there getting first hand experience of crisis intervention,I think we can all guess. Gulfsailor
Hey RubbaJohnny, at least we can agree on this subject. There is no place in the world for a technology that has the chance of killing billions. No matter how small the chance of a major accident is, the cost if it truly goes wrong is just too big. There were three major accidents and many small ones. When will it stop? Ps. You do realise who are the biggest financial contributors to the "global warming is caused by human exhausted CO2" right? It's the nuclear industry, whose biggest competitor is fossil fuel.
midas
Can a company that can't even get the spelling of the Prime Minister’s name correct be trusted to do something as intricate as carefully removing each of the 1,535 spent fuel rods and safely transport them to the common storage pool 50 meters away? Fukushima operator "sorry" for Japan PM name gaffe http://www.channelnewsasia.com/news/asiapacific/fukushima-operator-sorry/820220.html Conditions in the unit 4 pool, 100 feet from the ground, are perilous, and if any two of the rods touch it could cause a nuclear reaction that would be uncontrollable. The radiation emitted from all these rods, if they are not continually cool and kept separate, would require the evacuation of surrounding areas including Tokyo. Because of the radiation at the site the 6,375 rods in the common storage pool could not be continuously cooled; they would fission and all of humanity will be threatened, for thousands of years. http://www.huffingtonpost.com/charles-perrow/fukushima-forever_b_3941589.html?utm_hp_ref=science&ir=Science Edited September 21, 2013 by midas
boomerangutang
Nuke rods, new and used, need to be kept frigid in order to keep them from fissioning. The power for cooling units must come to the site via power lines or by using on-site generators. If there is a glitch in any step of powering those cooling units, shit hits the fan, proverbially speaking. A dirty nuke bomb is just a short circuit away. RubbaJohnny
Think I'll give the radioactive Olympics a miss even living here in LOS are we safe? Chernobyl damaged sheep were all over Europe, eveyears of Welsh Farmers couldn't compete. Here will shell fish considered unsafe by wealthy Japanese be slipped in covered in saice and lies ,of course not health controls and unbribeable sentrys ensure are wellbeing. Fukuschema is far from over and I think once sadly Hawaiians start suing someone action will occer

midas
Bill Maher had an entire segment on the radiation leak on "Real Time." He seems to think this should be a much bigger story in the news than it is. the Japanese media now share these sentiments News media should also do soul-searching over their failure to communicate the seriousness of the problem sufficiently to the public. The current situation of the crisis warrants no optimism. The Abe administration needs to honestly acknowledge the enormity of the challenge, and communicate its view and related information to audiences both at home and abroad. Then it should start taking steps to gain necessary knowledge and support from all over the world to tackle the challenge effectively. http://ajw.asahi.com/article/views/AJ201309210033
