BoT assures capital outflows, falling baht manageable
By English News

BANGKOK, Aug 28 – The Bank of Thailand (BoT) gave assurances today that Thailand's substantial international reserves can cushion the country in dealing with foreign capital outflows and the rapidly depreciating baht.

BoT Governor Prasarn Trairatvorakul said he could not predict when foreign investors would stop diluting their portfolios or return to the Thai bourse.

Capital has been transferred out of newly-emerged markets back to the US but Thailand’s economic fundamentals remain strong with only a slight current account deficit, he said, adding that the kingdom’s third quarter economic growth will definitely be better than in the second quarter.

Mr Prasarn said he is willing to explain to investors about the economies of newly-emerged countries which are different from the economic fundamentals of India and Indonesia – both suffering from long-standing current account deficits.

He said investors must analyse the differences, hoping that the domestic investment situation should improve after a meltdown in investor anxiety over the QE measures.

Mr Prasarn said the possibility of a US attack on Syria would likely push up global oil prices and increase the predicted price of Dubai crude oil to at US$105-107 per barrel.

Train services suspended for second day
The Nation

BANGKOK: -- With 10 trains cancelled on the route from Bangkok to Thailand's south, officials at Songkhla's Hat Yai Train Station took the opportunity of a quiet Wednesday to organise a "Big Cleaning Day" event to clean and maintain all trains so that they are ready to operate as soon as service resumes.

The suspension of train services continued for a second day with the rubber growers' protest still blocking a section of track in Nakhon Si Thammarat and no solution in sight.

Although train services in Phattalung, Songkhla's Hat Yai City and three southernmost provinces were still operating, many people shifted to other form of public transportation for convenience.

Minister Surapong confirms Blair's attendance in Sep

BANGKOK, 28 August 2013 (NNT) - Foreign Minister Surapong Tovichakchaikul confirmed former British prime minister Tony Blair’s attendance at next month’s political forum in Thailand, despite recent protest over his visit.

Mr Surapong said Thailand can benefit from the forum which is being held to provide insights from other world leaders who have been involved in peace dialogues in other regions. He insisted the forum is part of a solution to the ongoing political turmoil.

Apart from Mr Blair, 11 other world politicians including former President of Finland Marti Ahtisaari and expert on truth commissions and transitional justice Priscilla Hayner are set to deliver keynote remarks at the event.

Protesters had told the press that they do not agree with the government’s plan to pay Mr Blair 20 million baht to speak at the upcoming forum. The government has so far denied the protesters’ claim.
