I have been downloading movie files from private sites like TVC and Box for several years and NEVER had a virus or Trojan from any of them.

Open sites like PirateB are a different matter. Though mainly safe you still need to be cautious. I use Avira Free as my real time protection and it flags any dubious files before actually downloading them.

I also run Malwarebytes and Spybot and Superantispyware (all fee editions) at least once a week.

You can only seed back to the site you downloaded from.

A movie from say PirateB will not give you any seeding points on TVC.

Well I thought Sh!t! I've still got 5GB of download ratio left and stuck in the sticks without broadband - thanks to this thread.

** then I logged into the Box and notice an email inviting me to another site - anyone else get moved over as well? All the ratios on new site same as we left off at the box so life goes on. If you didn't get an invite I think you're SOL as its a non public site and no invites. Time will tell how it survives undercover I guess??

I got an invite to and have downloaded several programes from the new site last night. In my thinking this was move to keep the payers and get rid of the people who dont pay. For reference donated about £100 sterling in 3 years

Maybe that's why we got carried over. I gave about a quarter that amount using Paypal over same period just because I cannot upload on local ADSL. I haven't used new site or use it that much. Glad it's still a choice there tho.

I never paid the Box any money yet got transfered over.

I did try and keep a ratio of over 1 so maybe that was it.

Or perhaps it was my charming personality wub.pngw00t.gif

It must be your charming personality w00t.gif because I too kept my ratio above one and considering the average upload speeds from here in Thailand, that has not always been easy.

On the other hand, I've been made welcome at other sites too so I am quite happy with my lot :)

I'm pretty angry about the shoddy way that TheBox has handled this.

(1) They lied about the site closing down. It wasn't. It was just moving to z***.fm

(2) They only transferred people who had paid them in the past across, and didn't value people who had contributed to the success of the community by seeding generously. (In fact, given that most people who have paid for upload credit are those with poor connections, I rather suspect the new site won't perform as well as the old one.)

(3) They've launched a campaign of suppression of information about the new site. People who've posted innocent questions about it on the forums have had their posting privileges revoked (including me), and comments about the new site on other websites such as TorrentFreak have promptly been deleted. The Wikipedia article about TheBox which mentioned the new site and gave its URL has also been deleted. Frankly, it's rather ridiculous that they think that they can keep the new address secret for very long - particularly when they've irritated so many people who might want to hit back at them.

Boo Hooo !

I was active enough on The**** that my ratio hovered around 2.0 although I didn't contribute any money. No invite for me to the new site, and when I spotted some info about it on another forum, and asked about it without even posting the url on The**** forum, I was immediately banned from any further postings, and mine was deleted. Loved the place, but their current treatment of faithfuls as they move is really horrendous.

Don't know much of the workings of that place, but if I were setting up a torrent site (even one ratio based) I would not be picking people based on ratio but on contributions to other sites. Having a high ratio does not mean that you have contributed, it just means that you have been able to upload more than you download (can be done because of not downloading a huge amount; access to a seedbox for pumping up that number; have an internet connection with higher upload speeds). Contributions can be financial, but often are not. There are cappers that regularly encode and upload shows. You have individuals that encode DVD source material. You have people that set aside a fair amount of disk space to seed a larger catalogue of material over a long period of time. I can download recent material really quickly from Piratebay, but for a private tracker it is it's catalogue of material that does not die out that is it's most valuable. All of those people are more valuable than just a person with a high ratio. Since everyone has to upload more than they download to stay alive - having a high ratio is not the end-all and be-all.

If you are a member of The Box you will know what to do

and to keep your mouth shut, or risk expulsion.

If you are not, then TVChaos is the place to go. :D

Why so hard to find torrents?

I got the Google search of torrent engines why would i wanna play community ratio games with my limited upload link?

Message me if you want a link.

Just curious, but when UKNova (version 2) closed down and reopened as version 3, were any members automatically transferred (or, for that matter, even notified - I know I wasn't)? And if so, did they use the same criterion as TheBox (i.e. people who'd paid money)?
