Herb / Spice Availability

Featured Replies

Hi

Can anyone confirm whether the following are available in Bangkok:

Juniper Berries
Dill Seeds
Caraway Seeds
Celery Seeds
Paprika (and the type)

Thanks for any help

Paprika is easy. Even comes in large plastic bottles, locally produced. More expensive imported types are readily available in specialty supermarkets (Villa, Gourmet Market &c.). Spanish smoked paprika I've only seen once, and that was in Big C. I don't think I've ever seen any of the others for sale here.

I did once find celery salt, purely for use in Bloody Mary, but indeed, juniper berries, dill and caraway would be good to find.

Or ask your next visitor to bring some.

I'm in Chiang Mai but I've seen all those things except juniper berries in either Makro or Rim Ping supermarket. So between Makro and Villa you should be able to find most of this stuff. Juniper berries were once in Rim Ping but they sold out before I could get to them.

You can find caraway seeds (whole) 1/2 kilo pack for 190. baht at Royal Exquisite Foods Ltd

www.Royalgroupphuket.com (Oregano and Bay leaf also available but much more expensive)

I also brought dill seed and paprika in Thailand I believe it was at Villa's in Bangkok.

A good source for spices is at Makro in the spice section, along the back wall and the packaged spice section at the back of the section on the right side. Also check out you Chinese herbal medicine stores a lot of bulk spices sold.

Good Luck

Thanks for all the replies people.

I'm away from Bangkok at the moment and just couldn't remember which, if any, I've seen for sale around town.

I'll have a hunt upon my return.

For what it's worth I spotted celery salt at Foodland, Ram Intra yesterday. 99 Baht for a small jar. American import, I think. Didn't recognise the brand name.
