BANGKOK: -- Thai authorities have arrested and charged two suspected human traffickers, an Uzbek woman and a Thai man alleged to have been involved in luring another Uzbek woman into prostitution in the Thai capital.

Anti-Human Trafficking Division (AHTD) Police on Thursday arrested an Uzbek woman, and a Thai man identified as Phornchai Pantikote at Soi Nana in downtown Bangkok with an arrest warrant issued by the Criminal Court on suspicion of conspiracy to commit human trafficking.

The 25-year old victim, alias Jenny, earlier sought help from the Consulate-General of the Republic of Uzbekistan in Bangkok, claiming that the Uzbek suspect invited her to join in a clothing business which export clothes from Thailand to Uzbekistan. The suspect provided her with an air ticket to Thailand.

Once in Thailand, the victim was forced into prostitution in the Nana area to pay back the 90,000 baht air ticket. The Thai male suspect threatened to assault her and plant her with drugs so that she would be arrested by police if she refused to become a sex worker. The victim said Mr Phornchai claimed connections with senior police officers.

Mr Phornchai denied that he forced the victim into the sex trade but said he told her to repay the air ticket. He said he worked as a taxi driver in Soi Nana.

Meanwhile, Anti-Trafficking commander Pol Maj Gen Chavalit Sawaengphuet said most Uzbek women travel to Thailand to work as sex workers, adding that the two suspects will be questioned further. (MCOT online news)

pissing into the hurricane

Connections with senior police. This should result in major human trafficking busts in Thailand.

"Pol Maj Gen Chavalit Sawaengphuet said most Uzbek women travel to Thailand to work as sex workers"

That's got to be the stupidest thing said by plod ever. They really don't think before they speak.

Have that thought as an opinion, sure, but to say it to the press just shows you how thick they are.

Yes, and with your blinding insight at the fore, Pol Maj General Chavalit, I guess you and the relevant government departments have already spoken to the Uzbek authorities and put robust measures in place to prevent any more attempts at trafficking Uzbek women to Thailand.

And the rest of the countries from which women, men and children are trafficked from and into Thailand.

And are on the verge of arresting, charging and punishing those responsible across Thailand for this disgusting crime, including your colleagues and others in positions of influence and power.

And...

What's the point?

Interesting that MGen Chavalit knows the whereabouts of most Uzbek women. He must get around quite a bit.

is that an airline baggage tag around his wrist - are they short of handcuffs now? On second thoughts why not ship him out to Uzbec as air freight - I am sure the authorities there would love to get hold of him!

A friend went to Switzerland a few years ago to work cost here 1 million baht, that was airfare, visa and a few other things she never detailed. Over charging for there services is how they make money.

They will have a fair bit of competition here in Thailand with the local hookers.

Now I understand why she went to Uzbekistan-promote trade.

First thing I noticed. Hard to break out of that airline baggage tag!!!!!!!!!

Another scumbag thai taxi driver work together with scumbags from The Royal Thai Police, just after the kidnapping and extortion of two Italians.

And of course no photos with pointing fingers when Thais is involved.

When are they gone have crackdown on human traffickers, kidnappers, corrupt police and taxi drivers? That'l be the day coffee1.gif

Maybe she was required to repay twice - to Thai and to the other Uzbek woman? Charge for overhead :)

Stupid is what stupid does. 90,000 bt for airfare? If a person is going half way round the world to work, that they know nothing about, shouldn't they also take some responsibility? Human trafficking is a horrible way to be treated. Need to put tax on sex workers and have it assessed each 3-6 months. Then use this tax money to set up better system to fight human trafficking. Also knowing that you have to pay tax also puts others in spotlight if they tried to avoid tax.

Who knows? CDG is Charles de Gaulle airport Paris, maybe they transited through and picked up some Gucci gear?

In Thailand you may see plenty of prostitutes and foreign prostitutes, some of the ladies are scammed by their employer and secure them a good wage after they've begin their job. but the work was given them was to sell their bodies for pleasure. And that's the common stories of what I've heard on the news and a few documentaries.
