Fly out on old pasport, come in on new passport.

Featured Replies

I have a multiple entry non imm o which is due to run out in 3 months. My passport is also full, (almost). I have a new passport which has nothing in it.

My question would be is it possible to fly out of the country using my old passport, then when I arrive in Malaysia to get a new visa, enter Malaysia using my new passport. Have a new visa put in my new passport.

I guess i'm supposed to transfer the visa from old to new passport, but if it's about to run out would the above be possible?

Thanks to anyone who has some advice.

Better get a new passport, looks like Malaysia requires 6 months validity on your passport for entry.

Immigration Procedures
1. Entry Requirements into Malaysia
1.1 Passport or Travel Documents
All persons entering Malaysia must possess valid national passports or other internationally recognised Travel Document valid for travelling to Malaysia. These documents must be valid for at least six months from the date of entry into Malaysia.
Those with passports not recognised by Malaysia must apply for a Document in lieu of Passport as well as visa issued by the Malaysian Representative Office abroad. Applications for visas can be made at the nearest Malaysian Representative Office in the respective countries.
In countries where Malaysian Representative Office has not been established, applications can be made to the nearest British High Commission or Embassy.

He plans on using new passport that has more than 6 months on it for entry.

He would need do it this way to get visa with it because embassy will check for entry stamp for Malaysia.

Then leave Malaysia and enter here on new passport.

No problem.

Edit: Just read Op again. You need to show both passports when leaving Thailand. They will stamp your entry stamp from old passport in new one and stamp you out in it.

Since you have a visa this is how you do it no need to have stamps done at immigration.

They do not transfer visas.

You could use your valid visa until it expires by showing both passports on entry and they will stamp entry in your new passport.

Thanks

That's helpful. Just show both passports at immigration counter when leaving Thailand? They stamp the the new one as i leave right?

Yes they will stamp new passport.

Also you don't have to get a new visa yet.

Well, that's one of the good things about ThaiVisa, usually if incorrect info is posted, it's corrected PDQ.

Back to the drawing board....

No problem Mac.

I had to revise my post after re-reading the post.

Better to make the switch here in Thailand.

Talk to your embassy staff who is in charge of passports.

Get a paper or form from your embassy to the immigration to request a transfer of your entry stamp.

Normally immigration will do that, together with one or two more stamps stating in Thai that you have switched to a new passport. No big deal, could even be for free.

However, the VISA WILL NO BE TRANSFERRED!!! Entry stamp is issued by immigration, which is part of the police, which is under the Ministry of Interior. Visa is issued by an embassy/consulate, which comes under the Foreign Ministry.

If you have multiple entries, you will need to travel with BOTH passports, because the old one holds the still valid (!) visa. No big fuss at the border, they know this procedure. Your next visa will then be issued into your new passport and then you can leave the old one at home.

Had this happen to me before as well, so no sweat.

SamM.

You only have to go to immigration to transfer stamps if you have an extension of stay.

If you have a visa entry or visa exempt entry you just have it done when you leave the county.

Correct that a visa cannot be transfered.

When i travel the non imm o will be expiered and i'll be on the final 3 months of the mutiple entry.

Thanks for the help guys.

I've done this a number of years ago... With two passports (both valid) one was getting full the other was a back up incase I needed to apply for two visas for separate countries at the same time (as is sometimes required for my work)

I flew out on my old passport. Returned on my new passport with a new Visa.. no issues. Then replaced my old passport...

Don't forget your re-entry permit.

I won't need a re-entry as the non imm o will be finished.
