PHUKET: -- Police dished-out parking tickets to about a dozen luxury cars that were illegally parked along Phuket Town's Dibuk Road yesterday afternoon.

A video of the mass-ticketing of the vehicles obstructing traffic flow was posted yesterday on Youtube and has already attracted over 10,000 hits.

Many viewers commented to praise Phuket police for observing the same standard for both evidently wealthy car-owners and less well-off members of the public.

“There are at least three Lamborghini Gallardo and a Nissan GT,” said Hong Kong-based motor journalist Mark Sharp after viewing the footage..

The penalty for parking in a prohibited area is a modest fine of 500 baht (approx US$15.00). But according to Mr Sharp, “the Schadenfreude effect of the Youtube footage is priceless.”

Gawd a new concept. The police doing their job.

It'll never catch on coffee1.gif

can you imagine getting arrested for giving the highway police 200 Thb at a checkpoint

not sure if they will see a single baht.

you park in soi san sabai and your tyres get chained, here just a peace of paper....blown in the wind.

They are also ticketing over here in Khorat now. Hopefully the fees will rise accordingly to the time one fails paying it and have additional. impounding of the cars and or revoking the driver's licence included, would be very educating for some thais!

I wish they would do the same outside of family marts, 7/11's, and supercheaps. Bibs afford their own lambos for ticketing the thousands of people parking illegally and in the road here on a daily basis.

they couldn't find the owners of the luxury cars that burned a few month's back.. how do they think they are going to collect this money?

I think most of these luxury car owners "know someone" or are related to someone, that will make a lot of these fines disappear.

500 baht fine is a pittance. Tow the vehicles to impound yard, make it as inconvient as possible for the owners to pay fine, tow fee, etc. While your at it check that proper import taxes were paid.

The police did a half arsed job by going no further than illegal prking ticket.

This is only news,

because it's something the cops here rarely do.

They could make more money if they cited people for the things they truly do,

that are illegal ie. driving down a one way road in the wrong direction,

or illegal parking,

or driving without a helmet,

but instead they prefer to hassle people once a week at these road blocks,

hoping to make up for the other six days a week they just sat on their asses,

and played video games or slept.

Consistency isn't in their vocabulary,

but it should be!

I agree with most here. If those cars where normal everyday cars they would all get wheel locks on them. I also would say that all the owners where in the cafe looking down with a big smile on their faces.

500 Baht?? Yeah, that will scare them to death!! Recently in Moscow, sat and watched a fleet of about TEN trucks with cranes and webbing with wheel brackets pick up and remove 25 illegally parked flash cars. One owner arrived, tried to talk the coppers out of it, even pulled out a wad of Roubles, no way, off it went. I sat in a street cafe watching this for half an hour, the waiter who spoke a little English said it happens two or three times a week.

Apparently it costs a small fortune to get your car back.

Now I do believe that could hurt!!

The real story here is not about police writing parking tickets. It is about the Thai Chinese elite who own the Dibuk strip reminding the Bangokok weekend warriors who is boss.

The title of this article is misleading. It makes you believe that Phuket police specifically singled out luxury cars that were illegally parked on this street. Is this true? Were other cars that were illegally parked yet not being luxury ticketed also?

"Phuket Town's Dibuk Road"

Some VIP must have been planning on driving through Dibuk that day...

Sidewalks are prime parking lots for motorbikes all over Phuket town. VIP's never plan to use sidewalks...whistling.gif

There's always a first time for everything,, the car owners must be wondering why this piece of paper is on their windscreen,, never seen it before.
