Google maps and finding addresses

Featured Replies

I have read on this forum that looking up addresses can be problematic on google maps.

I found this address on http://jcintermarketing.com/contact.php

"32/1-4 Soi Ekachai 80, Ekachai Rd., Bangbon, BanGkok, 10150 Thailand.10150"

Is this constructed correctly ?

Google maps cannot make sense of that and my guess is it has spelling error would this be the correct assumption:

"Ekkachai 80, Ekkachai Rd., Bang Bon, Bangkok, 10150 , Thailand. "

Would this be the correct street?

Is there a way to find where plot "32" would be?

On the Thai yellow pages: http://profile.yellowpages.co.th/en/508843591749001

I get "Khwang Bang Bon Khet Bang Bon Bangkok 10150" does that help - it seems to be a general area not as specific as address given above.

I do not live in Thailand. Any advice would be appreciated.

Soi Ekachai 80 is here, you may be able to see the plot numbers on Street View

13.667443,100.410715

"I don't want to know why you can't. I want to know how you can!"

I never knew Bkk had street view - I'll have some fun revisiting some of my old haunts.

Old Haunts are largely gone!!

Washington Square, and all that was in it.

The Golden Palace Hotel on Suk Soi 1

The Way Not Bar on Sukumvit about Soi 16 or so.

Mithc & Nams, same area

The Cock & Bull, now under the hotel and Robinson's at Suk Soi 17-19

How many more?

Oh, yes, end of this year, bye bye Federal Hotel, Suk Soi 11.

Shed a tear for all.

Thanks Crossy.
Wow that was really close - just happened to be half way down that "soi" at "13.667523,100.410705" (within a metre of your suggestion)
Thanks for confirming it was the right area, I then looked everywhere on the street and eventually spotted the number :-D
I assume that was a spelling error "Soi Ekkachai 80" not "Soi Ekachai 80" ?
So is ""32/1-4 Soi Ekkachai 80, Ekkachai Rd., Bang Bon, Bangkok, 10150 , Thailand." the correct way to give address to taxi drivers and mailing address?

I have found Google Maps/Earth to be largely useless when using Thai addresses. Latest example. I put into Google Maps an address in Samut Sakorn exactly as it was on the Contacts page of the company I wished to visit. Google Maps gave me the standard 'we don't understand the address etc etc' Same on the car GPS.

We have now worked out an infallible method of getting to an address neither Google Maps or the GPS can find. I start driving and when we are not sure the wife just asks the nearest local where to go. Sure it takes a few, sometimes lots of asks yet eventually we get there. Then I use the Where am I function on the GPS and save it. Backwards way of doing it yet it works.

Edit, my crap spelling!

give address to taxi drivers

99.99% of all Bangkok taxi drivers will never be able to find an adress from an english script address FULLSTOP

Many will even have problems finding an address in Thai script without some kind of map/plan attached with landmarks etc.

Thai Post is one of the few organisations which are capable to find a house from the adress at all.

The numbering system is somewhat "chaotic", as the plot/house numbers are assigned chronologically by the land office.

We live in 340/1, next house of the sister-in-law is 8/1.

Many of the problems with Google Maps result from the even more chaotic transcription usage.

Officially RTGS is used, buty english speakers often use completely different script.

Could give you a neverending stream of examples.

The previous post can be used: "Samut Sakorn" is "Samut Sakhon".

Google is often "wise" enough to find the right guess.

Try the wrong spelling "Chaiyaphoom" and it will propose "Chaiyaphum", the official transcript.

The best guess for the adress in english script:

------------

32/1-4 Soi 80
Ekkachai Road
Bang Bon
Bangkok 10150

Thailand

-------------

Bang Bon is the city district.

Some hints in Thai script:

32/1-4 ซอย 80

ถนนเอกชัย = Ekkachai Road (Thanon Ekkachai)

เขต บางบอน = District (Khet) Bang Bon

Just found this site (Thai script from "english" street names), haven't checked it thourougly yet:

Just trying to figure out, whether "Ekkachai" or "Ekachai" is the official transcript. Its a tricky one smile.png

But for postal purposes either one is OK.

I hardly ever use Google Earth, a lot of it is in Thai, ie, try finding the directions for Nakhon Sawan to Pattaya.

Ekkachai is the correct spelling, Google has it right.

Enter it in the search field and you get this:

Zoom in and just left of the placemarker you see Soi 80.

I think Google Maps would work fine better if you are able to enter an address in Thai. Using transliterated English can be challenging.

Google Maps with Directions, and even Turn-by-Turn navigation with voice assist, changed over the last year. It used to display road names in both Thai and English, but now just Thai. Unfortunately.

For a Taxi I might mention Bang Bon, Ekkachai Soi 80, then deal with the exact building as I got closer?

Soi 80 is just a 300 m dead-end street. Not that big challenge to find the requested address (company).

A phone call by the taxi (driver) will help.

KhunBENQ and other posters thank you for your feedback it has been very useful. I am sure most first time visitors to Thailand have no idea that street addresses are not sequential. I know of no other countries that do this (so far) it is obviously quite a challenge for foreign visitors navigating the country! biggrin.png

(I find what I was looking for with some of the above help)
