Hi Everyone

I am looking for some advice regarding my soon to be born son.

I am Irish and my wife is Thai. I have serched a lot on google but can only find topics relating to the U.S.A.

How do I go about getting him Dual citizinship for Thailand? He will be born in Ireland and we are living in Ireland.

Also looking for any info on getting myself into Thailand long term as we want to move there just havnt decided when yet.

As Jessie J would say....Its all about the money :)

Thanks

You will need to take him to a Thai Embassy to register the birth.

process usually takes about 6 weeks, allow 6 months.

You can do this when the child is any age, I took my daughter when she was 2 1/2

Make sure you have correct docs and fee (contact details below)

Yep agreed - did the same with both my daughters. No worries. They take fingerprints on a scanner of babies because they can't sign - my oldest was 6 and had to sign, the youngest was 4 and didn't. Will need you both to attend with the baby, with ID and birth/marriage certs. Get the birth cert (Thai) first - sent to you, then apply for the passport again via the embassy.

I'm confused. Won't the boy automatically have Thai citizenship from birth?

Legally yes, but Thailand does not have a built in psychic baby alert - the baby needs to be registered with Thailand just as it was after birth with Ireland.

Get the birth cert first ?? If he is born in Ireland he won't have a Thai birth cert ?

No, you miss read my post. Register the birth via the THAI Embassy in Ireland, then you will get the THAI birth certificate sent to you (i.e. get that first) ... THEN you can apply for a THAI passport for him.

Just looked at the the details on that site and it says we have to apply in person at the London embassy?

That seems a bit dumb for an Irish family. Do we really need to drag everyone to London?

You reporrt the birth to the authorities as normal. When that has been done, you report the birth to the Thai embassy for your country.

The UK-embassy website has all the details and forms for that. With that done, the child will be registered in the Thai birth register and the child will also get a Thai birth certificate. Now the Thai government knows that a Thai national has been born.

You can apply for a Thai passport for the child at the same time as the birth certificate.

Unfortunately yes.

Since there is no Thai embassy or official consulate in Ireland you don't have any choice.

The London Embassy do a day in Dublin every so often. They were in one of the rugby clubs in Donnybrook a few months back. Check the website for next visit. Prob once a year. All very easy. Fill in a few forms and pay for postage. They post out birth cert a few weeks later.

We haven't bothered with passport yet for our daughter, but same thing it can be done during the yearly visit.

The birth certificate can be done remotely. So no worries on that front.

The passport however has to be done in person. As others have said, the Thai embassy in London does regular visits to towns and cities which it has responsibility for, where they bring the equipment necessary to process the passports. Just keep an eye out on the embassy website for when they will visit Dublin next.
