Tropical depression already drenching parts of northeast

BANGKOK: -- Authorities have identified 37 flood-prone spots in Bangkok in the face of a coming tropical depression.

The depression, which entered Thailand's Northeast yesterday morning, is expected to reach the Central region today. It is expected to bring rain.

Traffic Police chief Pol Maj-General Piya Tavichai yesterday said Bangkok residents should avoid all of the 37 flood-prone spots, if possible, during heavy downpours.

Among these spots are a portion of Rajavithi Road between Suan Dusit Rajabhat University and the Krung Thon Buri Bridge; a portion of Phya Thai Road in front of the Livestock Development Department; and a stretch of Ratchadaphisek Road in front of Robinson Department Store.

Sanya Chenimit, deputy permanent secretary of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA), said some of the capital's low-lying spots had already been drained in preparation for possible rain.

Based on what he has seen so far, Sanya expects the coming depression to affect the city only indirectly.

"It may cause light rain, but will not bring any serious downpours," he said.

As part of the preparations, Sanya said officials had been instructed to conduct constant checks to ensure that no garbage blocked drainage pipes. Clogged pipes are often blamed for flooding.

He added that people could ease the problem of clogged pipes by putting garbage into bins.

In a separate interview, PM Yingluck Shinawatra emphasised the need for the BMA to dredge canals and drainage pipes.

"I don't want to see the BMA [waiting to] talk about drainage until upstream run-off water has already arrived," she said.

She said the central government had worked hard on managing water volumes in upstream and midstream areas so as to minimise the impacts on Bangkok.

At the peak of the 2011 flood crisis, the central government and the BMA quarrelled over how best to manage the water volume. The floods submerged some parts of the capital.

Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department director-general Chatchai Phromlert said the depression would increase rainfall in Mukdahan, Amnat Charoen, Ubon Ratchathani, Yasothon, Roi Et, Si Sa Ket, Surin, Sa Kaew, Rayong, Chanthaburi and Trat during the next two days.

"We are now paying close attention to risky areas such as at the foot of mountains and low-lying areas," he said.

Meanwhile, downpours continued in many parts of Phitsanulok yesterday.

The province's Disaster Prevention and Mitigation office warned people in Wang Thong, Nakhon Thai, Chat Trakan, Wat Bote and Noen Maprang districts to beware of possible flash floods and landslides.

Phitsanulok is among the flood-prone provinces that Yingluck has expressed concerns about.

All this talk of flooding in BKK is bringing back nightmares of 2011. Six weeks of inundation with foul smelling water. No thank you. Yet you have to feel for those people who have to suffer flooding every year. If only the money 'spent' on flood mitigation works was actually spent on flood mitigation works we might all be better off.

Mark the flood spots that should help a lot

Been raining non stop here in the Rangsit area since yesterday afternoon, still pouring now as I write. The main canal here is not looking good :-(

In the Khannayao area it has been raining steadily since yesterday afternoon. Not heavy, but non stop.

edit: So where is the link to these 37 flood prone spots? I checked the original article could not find it. Are they kept secret in order to avoid "panic"?

Warning "Tropical Depression in South China Sea"

BANGKOK: -- The tropical depression has made landfall over middle Vietnam passing Laos PDR and Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand and downgraded to the low pressure cell through the Northeast. At 4.00 a.m. on 20 September, the low pressure covers provinces of Saraburi, Lop Buri and Nakhon Nayok.

Torrential rain is likely, as well as isolated gust much of the following provinces, namely, Phitsanulok, Kamphaeng Phet, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Saraburi, Lop Buri, Ang Thong, Suphan Buri and Phra Nakhon Si Ayutthaya, as well as Bangkok and Vicinity.

Another storm “USAGI” east of the Philippines, tracks west-northwest to the upper part of the country. It is forecast to move to the South China Sea. All travelers are advised to follow the weather forecast before their departure.

not 100% sure where her house is, anyone see flood in this area ? or Bang Yai ?

Me everywhere in Village is smelling bad of drains, so guess water not running away or backing up.

Thailand sees rain forecast countrywide

BANGKOK, Sept 20 -- The Meteorological Department of Thailand has forecast torrential rain as likely countrywide, and the capital was hit by continuous rain overnight, causing water backup in some areas.

The weather atgency said in its latest advisory statement that the tropical depression which came across central Vietnam, Laos and Ubon Ratchathani is now downgraded to a low pressure cell across the Northeast, including the central provinces of Saraburi, Lop Buri and Nakhon Nayok.

Rain was expected at Phitsanulok, Kamphaeng Phet, Nakhon Ratchasima, Nakhon Nayok, Prachin Buri, Chachoengsao, Chon Buri, Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat, Nakhon Sawan, Uthai Thani, Chai Nat, Sing Buri, Saraburi, Lop Buri, Ang Thong, Suphan Buri and Ayutthaya, as well as Bangkok and vicinity.

The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) Department of Drainage and Sewerage reported that overnight rains backed up and clogged at the Makasan and Bang Khen areas.

It was expected that the rain would ease in the afternoon.

In the central province of Ang Thong, water from the Chao Phraya River overflowed to flood Pa Mok's Phong Pheng district. The continued heavy rain has caused more damage to flooded households. Residents must move their valuables to higher ground. (MCOT online news)

Im in Bang Bua Thong / bang yai.. no flooding where I am but even in 2011 this was one of the last spots to flood in the area. I don't worry as it usually floods in parts of Bang Bua Thong but only a small part. Most of it never floods unless they start to mess around with the dams like in 2011. That was sheer incompetence nothing more nothing less. All hail for red stupidity. (wanted to get an extra round of rice harvest so they kept the dams full)

I thought the Government guaranteed they had the flood thing in the Bangkok area solved. You just can't believe the people you elect to office who suppose to protect the Thai population. So much for the flood Mitigation Dept.

I dont believe the 2011 scenario will come again in 2013. we had less rain in July/august , dont forget the flood in 2011 was the water coming from central thailand , nothing to do with heavy rain in September. in Rangsit area no flood yesterday and today ... just the usual

They did. The Politicians live on high ground, no flooding. They don't go to work. And they divided the "fix the flood problem" money amongst themselves. Problem solved. This is Thailand, the more the politicians talk about a problem in the news the less they actually do about it and the money goes into the wrong pockets. And the Thai people think this is "Business As Usual". I live 300 meters from the beach. No flooding here, then or now. What do you actually want from a bunch of thugs that take their orders from a man in Dubai, or a sister that couldn't make money with a phone business in a land where phones rule. And, I suppose that "The Clan" will make money off the new flood money issued to "help the people" this time too.

The 2011 was caused by releasing the water from the dams too late, they had to release it when the river was high already. This was caused because politicians wanted an extra rice harvest and did not want the water from the dams at that time. So they were not allowed to release the water. Then when they had to release it or the dams would go critical there was high water already.. so a perfect storm.

As usual nobody was really punished for this incompetence that flooded my home for more then 2 months. This village has never ever been flooded in its 50 years of existence, so I dont worry too much under normal circumstances.

I live in Bang Bua Thong.. hard hit at that time and harder because they wanted to keep BKK dry.. had they just let it pass it would have been ok. For all those saying it does not matter if its flooded 1 day or 1 month.. damage is already done.. try to live with it one day and one month and measure the difference.. not all damage is financial.

This would be the day I need to go to immigration wouldn't it?

But immigration was high and dry and pretty empty to boot. Collected yearly stamp and then went on to do a 90 day report...in and out in 40 minutes. Of course it then took an hour and 45 minutes to drive back home, and that was on the "expressway".

Sucks about Korat, but I am still looking for the secret 37 flood prone spots of BKK. I know Sutthisan Rd is one.

For all those people worrying, this is just a normal rain season.. maybe even dryer as usual, as long as they don't empty those dams on a unfavorable time we will all be alright. With all I mean the people who normally (not counting 2011) don't flood you won't flood now either. This is something that happens every year and every year some parts will flood usually the same parts. Here in Bang Bua Thong there is a part that always gets a bit of flooding every year. Its the same all over the place.

In rangsit there are places that flood every year too.

And those 37 spots are...............????????????????????

Last year bangkok police identified 21 areas prone to flooding quickly in the city. Richard barrow published the list.
