Forgive me if this was intended to be a Thai only complaint, but have any of you noticed the youth in your own countries?

Your right but it's not to the scale of Thai villages imo
I liken the villages to red brick council estates in the uk. Full of salt of the earth types, generally good people. But low education levels and few job oportunities for several generations have created some long standing social issues.
From an Australian perspective I compare it to the Australian aboriginals.

The big difference is that Aboriginals receive social security benefits, the local lay-abouts don't.

Couple of years military service should sort them out.

This brings up a good point. There is the " conscription lottery" (for lack of a better term) and young men often do what they can to avoid the process of drawing a ball. Perhaps in situations like the (village) idlers, the odds of joining the military for a couple of years could be increased for these potential trouble-makers. If everybody knew that, then maybe some of these kids would be motivated to look for jobs or a constructive way to spend their time. Alternately or additionally, if idle youth have had problems with illegal activities and are caught by the police, they could be given a 3 to 6 month period to find productive jobs/activities, and if unable to do so, they could be placed in the military for a couple of years.

I hate to make suggestions like this as they really go against the freedom I think we should all enjoy, but sometimes tough decisions have to be made that benefit all, especially with misdirected young people.

BTW, the version I grew up with is, "Idle hands do the Devil's work."

As long as the poorly educated youngsters continue to be indulged and supported by their mothers/sisters/aunts/girlfriends, they'll continue to believe that the world owes them a living. We know that employment opportunities exist, and so do they, but as long as there's fuel for the 'bike, a bit for either alcohol and/or drugs, where's the encouragement to get up and make an effort? A bit of inter-village violence is simply normal fun. Unfortunate if someone gets killed, but that's how it goes.

I know of families nearby who are exclusively supplied with their needs by their mothers who, oddly enough, are living with foreigners. These young, able-bodied guys are able to spawn kids in the certain knowledge that they will be provided for, without any useful input, (other than sperm), to the family well being. Questioned about it, the supporting grandmother will say 'what can I do - they're my sons and my grandchildren - if not me, then who?'

Johnny foreigner will foot the bill.

Johnny foreigner will foot the bill.

Every so often the worm turns, or the farang grows a spine.

Just pray you dont find yourself in the situation at friend of mine found himself in,

"you are not my father, you can not tell me what to do"

was what was thrown in his face by an ungrateful loser.

Farang says correct, nice knowing you good luck and good bye, and goes to collect his things and move on.

At that moment his mrs had to make a choice, the gravy train was about to pull out.

Result, loafer banished to live with grand parents.

The sad part is that, having been put in his place by the ungrateful youngster, and threatening to move on, and although that ungrateful, sullen, resentful youngster has been banished to the grandparents, the mother will, undoubtedly, continue to send money to support him. Money, (need I add), provided still by the foreigner.

No wonder so many Thais call us stupid.

Sort out what?

Teach them better aiming next time they decide to settle things with shooting?

I dont see how idling around in military would be solution for the villagers.

Getting a job would be, but there isnt that many jobs, especially in the countryside, period.

Thai stat is a big fat lie about unemployment beeing 1% in the country.

Not sure where in Thailand you are but here in Rayong there is a severe labour shortage. Anyone that wants a job has one. Most staff come from somewhere else in Thailand but I still see gangs of unemployed youth hanging around. I think it is just lack of ambition and sheer laziness. As long as they can get or steal enough money to survive they don't care. Ambition to improve yourself is totally lacking from a considerable percentage of the Thai male population.

^^^^^^,

correct, the problem still exists, its just been moved elsewhere.

The only satisfaction the guy has, tranquility now in the house.

Yes the poor mug still picks up the tab.

Mate the stories I could tell you are un effin believable, you only have to read this forum to get a feel for what happens.

One farang, his 15 year old stepson moved his 14 year old g/f into the house, with not so much as a bye your leave.

The same prick then started to steal from the father by going into the bedroom, no wonder so many have locks on doors.

I could go on, why bother.

The best advice I can give,

DO NOT GET INVOLVED WITH A WOMAN WITH BOYS IN TOW.

Sorry for shouting, but for <deleted> how desperate are some people to take up with a woman, even the Thais dont get involved.

So much for enjoying your retirement years, having to put up with some worthless prick, the best part of him ran down his mothers leg.

Ambition / bettering ones self, seems a foreign idea in deepest Isaan, do ya think?

You can educate them all you want, you can provide more training courses than you can shake a stick at, you can even provide them with a job, all to no avail, the one thing you cant do is install a work ethic.

Bone idle wasters content to scrounge off the family and anyone else dumb enough to give them money.

I would like to add this is only a small but significant percentage of guys. Most families have the odd outcast. They just have to be dealt with, properly..

Don't forget the majority of guys are doing their best and are highly motivated to work. Sadly the oppertunity lacks.

I dont know the last time you were in either Pattaya or Bangkok, there are plenty of jobs advertised.

Perhaps these guys should follow the example of the plenty of hard working people from Issan who make the journey south to find employment, and stay for years trying to better themselves and at the same time support elderly relatives upcountry whilst also raising a family in Bangkok.

Or Rayong Province. There is a real shortage of people willing to work here

Why, do you think he has moved her in?

My answer would be:

Because the guy has no experience in life and no sense of responsibility. A 15 year old can't make a decision like that. But he has... and there is no-one around to stop him, no one who puts him in his place.

It ain't about to happen in this farang's house...and my wife would back me up.

Short answer, because he can.

Of more concern to me would be, what sort of family would allow a 14 year old girl to move in with a 15 year old unemployed school kid?

What sort of background is the girl trying to escape from, was the girl pushed into it by a family that can smell farang money?

I dont have the answers, and to be frank dont really care.

Heres another incident from upcountry, told to me by the Thai woman it happened to.

Thai woman driving her motorbike through the village, some old yai pushes a young kid out infront of the motorbike in the hope the kid gets hit and the yai can extract money from the mia farang.

Honestly you couldnt make this shit up.

Thanks for the replies. It's appreciated.

Thinking about the kids are not valued and appreciated as much as they would be in in the west. Those kids are not being controlled or focused at all.

Remember if you are living in a house owned by your wife/girlfriend AND within her family village or even worse on family land, don't be too sure that your life can continue as happy as before you evicted the kid.

Been there done that.

There's "bad boys" in every country with too much time on their hands who are too interested in "being cool" to bother with getting an education, then they find that their only employment options involve hard work with only peanuts for salary (Particularly in Thailand where unskilled labour wages are particularly pitiful).

Often even factory or sales clerk positions require applicants to have finished at least mattayom 3 or 6. I see kids every term who come to me, often escorted by their parents, asking me to change their grade so they can graduate from mattayom 3 or 6. Often I see on their sheets that they have failed 10+ different subjects because they never even bothered to attend school. And that's just the ones who's parents try to put them on the right track, if just upto the kids themselves, they probably wouldn't even bother.

It's not surprising that many of them then choose to bludge off their family and eventually turn to crime.

Some of them fix their ways though. The Nor Sor Gor (School for Non Formal Education) can help them to get a qualification equivalent of high school, and its super relaxed/easy, so with a little bit of effort they can pass and get their lives back on track. When my gf and I have taught classes there, we've sometimes seen kids as young as maybe 16 studying (sometimes ones I failed the year prior), as well as adults (its mainly for adults).

So if any of your extended family are trouble makers who dropped out of school and don't want to work, try and encourage them to attend the Gor Sor Nor, as it'll maybe give them a second chance at life. Pretty much every Tambon has one I think, so it's really easy for them to attend, and it'll put them back on the right track.

If there are problems within a family house then the problem lies with the parents.

If the situation is biological mother and step father, whether Thai or foreign, and the mother sides with the kids then their is a problem with the relationship.

All of this bullshit about living in wife's house, on wife's land, with wife's parents and step kids makes me laugh. At the end of the day you are married to your wife. If your relationship is that poor that you are constantly having to moan on forums about how you have problems then you are in the wrong relationship. Just do what a Thai man would do. Move on.

Just as a side note. Many time that I have witnessed problems the husband has not been totally wholesome himself. Many times I have heard things about how a wife has been a pain in the ass, and ten minutes later the bloke talking gets up and goes for a "massage". Marraige works both ways gentlemen.

It is clear you guys don't know my wife or our relationship.

I would probably have to stop her from taking a broom stick to the boy and the girl in the first place. Then she would throw them out of the house if I didn't.

The son could move in with his grandmother less than one kilometer away but he wouldn't have a 15 year old girlfriend there either.

.......... and not to forget: A few decades ago "work" had to be performed 2x a year. The rest of the year, everybody was idle.

Today, everybody wanting i-phones,motorbikes and all the other junk, this would mean to work more and regularly. A frightening thought for a great number of Thais. For sure, "work" was not invented by Thais, it was invented by Germansbiggrin.png

An alternative is always the lottery. And if that doesn't work, go for "big game" = marry a Farang ! Unlike a Thai-Husband that can pack his possessions into a 7/11 plastic bag and leave, the Farang has usually already spilled a good part of his financial assets on location in form of "immovable-assets". He is therefore much less likely to move out in order to escape unpleasant life-surroundings, as opposed to the Thai-Hubby with his plastic bag. Thais know about this, believe it or not.

The current economic boom is fueled by loans that were taken by the government by way of international capital-markets. Would have been nice if the current boom had it's roots in increased productivity, increased work-ethics and stuff like that.

I think Thailand was a happier Thailand, when work was limited to 2x a year (with no i-phones). Seems to me, the average Thai does not really fit into this oncoming globalization rat-race picture.

Cheers.
