I just bought a new Toyota Vigo fitted with the Toyota navigation system, same as fitted to the latest Fortuna, and have a major issue.

For the first week it was fine, in the bottom left hand corner of the screen the letters GPS appeared in green and it followed routes perfectly.

After about five days, the green GPS started to go off and come on every few minutes and then on a trip to Buri Ram it went off completely and the display had me going all across fields and generally was a waste of time.

At the first service I complained and said that I thought there was something wrong with the connection between the aerial and the head unit as there was no signal appearing on the screen.

They tried to tell me that if I went out of Bangkok I needed to reset the screen in new provinces, rubbish, it should locate wherever in Thailand.

All the engineer did was to set the screen close to where the garage was located and said he fixed it.

I am hoping that one of the TV readers has this same unit and can tell me if I am right, and the green GPS letters should be illuminated all the time to show there is a signal being received.

Then I will really complain next week,

thanks for any help anyone can provide

Have you installed a dash cam?

When I fitted one the GPS stopped working.

I have since bought another dash cam and fitted it in a different location and the GPS is working fine now. Though sometimes takes a while to get the signal.

I would never have thought this would be the problem, just nipped out to the car park and took the dashcam away and, hey presto, the green GPS came back on. Map has not changed yet, but cant move the car at the moment, will try and see if it is OK on the way to home tonight.

Looks like I need to apologise to Toyota girl, but if it is as simple as this, and with the growing number of dash cams being fitted, I am surprised they did not know about it. Guess I can educate them for the next time a customer comes in complaining !

many thanks Daffy D.

When it first happen I Googled to see if anyone else was having the same problem and try to find a solution but would you believe no one else was having the same problem.

Why only Me w00t.gif

Before buying the new cam I wrapped the one causing the problem in baking foill and that sopped it blocking the GPS signal.

I also noted that starting the GPS before switching on the camera would also work. but that was a hassle.

Before dashingg out to buy an new cam (which may still be a problem) try it indifferentt positions you may get lucky.

On a slightly different note, recently the Navigator lady sometimes stops giving directions. The map works alright and I get the "boing" like she is about to say something but then just silence. Women they're just the same everywhere. whistling.gif

Think yourself lucky...mine never shuts up.Seriously I think you will find a settting for different types of alerts...whether you want speech warnings or sound for each level.

The GPS signal can also be greatly reduced if installing certain types of window film, like the highly reflective/silver/metallic type which does a great job in blocking sunlight and not being able to see into the vehicle but the "metallic" material in the film also blocks RF signals. When I got my new Fortuner years back with GPS the dealer installed highly reflective film and for the next week I would have problems with the GPS picking up a good signal especially Bangkok with all the tall building which reduce signal pickup. Took it back to the dealer, asked him if the film used was metallic type, he said of course...top quality...he then realized the metallic film was blocking/reducing the signal to the GPS antenna in the dash. He had the windshield film replaced with some good quality regular/non-metallic film and GPS then worked fine even in the building canyons of Bangkok.

I also looked for solutions on some of the US toyota forums, but like DD found no one else appeared to have the same problem.

Moved the dash cam to top of the screen and it is OK. Except that I now have to work out how to run the cable round the screen so it looks tidy !

No problem so far with the screen filtering, but I will ask if it it metalic or not when I go back for service.

I too have the occasional 'bong' sound but then no verbal instruction, but no idea why.

Just glad to have sat nav working again,

cheers
