I live at Mapbrachan, about 12 kms from Sukhumvit. From memory, I think TT &T and Loxinfo told me the limit is 10 kms - maybe less, I really can't remember the distance exactly. Anyway all the broadband providers said I was too far out.

There is a guy out here, (Monty on the forum) who says he has adsl by not telling them how far out he is, and when they installed it it worked OK.

If you're in Pattaya, I suggest you check with TT&T offices in Carrefour, True (On Sukhumvit) and Loxinfo (turn Right past Carrefour, on the left) and ask them yourself. Do you have a land line? they are very difficult to get.

Other alternatives: Hutch (via simcard and lap top) - you will need a Thai subsriber. I understand it is quite slow but works out at Mapbrachan.

Ipstar satellite (via Loxinfo). There have been many Ipstar 'complaints threads' on the bad quality of this service. It has been liable to frequent down time, and is often very slow. For the past 2-3 months it has been a lot better. If you need it for business you will get frustrated, as you will with just about every form of Broadband in Pattaya.

No doubt you will recieve more advice from other members.

I think at Siam Lake view you will have no luck...

As Moby said, I managed to get adsl at Mabprachan by cheating a bit, but I'm closer to the exchange then where you are, and I'm absolutely at the distance limit (meaning it stops working when it rains or when it's windy etc...)

Just getting a phone line will be a challenge already!

Basically your only options are Hutch and iPSTAR. Hutch is OK if you get good signal reception (about double speed of what you would get through dial-up), iPSTAR can be much better, they only seem to have problems getting a decent up-time (meaning they're out quite a few hours every day)...

I'm at Natheekarn Park View about 1/2 mile past the Terrace. Last year I went to TT&T in Carrefour to see if I could get ADSL. They said it was over subscribed at that time and I was also too far away but asked me to fill out a form for when it became available later. About 2 weeks ago TT&T phoned to ask if I was still interested in ADSL as they were doing a promotion - look on TT&T website, router, registration and first month for only 3baht. I said yes and they said they would phone again when someone would come to the house. As yet, no-one as phoned, I will go in to Carrefour soon to find out what as happened and post.

That's very interesting. Please keep us 'Mabprachanians' informed of developments.

I'd love to dump my Ipsar when the contract expires if there is a viable alternative. :o

I wonder why wind and rain affect a signal down a copper wire.

If it were satellite I would understand..........

the old UBC excuse.

It reminds me of an old wives tale in Bangkok.

The bank telephone connections to the ATM's were reputed to get worse when the birds arrived in winter,

as they all sat on the wire and it stretched, so the signal had further to go...............

Not pretty sure how exactly the rain influences the adsl signal.

The attenuation (loss over the cable) remains pretty much the same, but the SNR ratio drops very low. Means that during the rain so much noise gets picked up by the copper wire, the adsl modem gets problems picking the real data out of all that noise...

Might be a side effect of the wet electricity cables starting to buzz in the rain???

It does work perfect when dry, when the rain starts falling, first the modem will downshift speeds, until connection gets lost alltogether... About 30 minutes after the rain, the modem picks up again at the slowest speed (32kbps), and then gradually upshifts to the full 512 kbps...

So I asked in TT&T about the offer they phoned me about - "Solly mister, you are too far away from exchange!" So why you call me then? - "Solly mister, new staff!" So when can I expect to get ADSL? - "Maybe June or July!" This year? - "Don't know mister!" T I T. :o:D

Thanks all for the quick answer. I am now in the Maprachan area, seems like no ADSL here, as I talked to a few people. I just subscribed to Loxinfo IPStar. Given the mixed user reports on IP Star I wonder how this will turn out.

Thanks for all your comments and let's hope that they will provide ADSL here sooner or later.

It is my understanding that the signal is just like a microwave oven - When the wave hits a water molecule, it transfers it's energy into heat in the water, thus reducing the overall signal strength - Just like a microwave oven heats up a liquid.
