Visa Run, Had Lek border point-Cambodia, Advise needed.

Recommended Posts

Hi everybody,

I have non-o multiple visa, live in BKK i plan to drive to Koh Chang for a few days holiday just before my 90 days expire so i thought if im already there not far from Had Lek border point, i could make my leave and entry again to Thailand to get my next 90 days

but Its gonna be my first border run, i never did this before, i read many relevant info here on the forum, but if anybody could assure me that its indeed as i imagine it is:

- so can I just drive there to Had Lek, leave my car there somewhere in a carpark

- walk through the thai border point,

- get a cambodian visa on arrival, pay the 20 usd

- enter cambodia

- then walk back , and enter Thailand again?

is there any limitation?

like i have to spend at least 1 hour or 1 day in cambodia before return to Thailand, or i can just walk back as soon as I left?

(also what if I leave Thailand but not buy cambodian visa and not enter Cambodia, just after leave Thailand go back immetiately , is that be a problem? or I must enter Cambodia first then return to Thailand?)

sorry for the many question and I hope its not confusing, I just never did this before and want to be sure it will go smooth

thank you so much for your help

For any border run you will have to enter the country chosen to run to and come back to Thailad with all the releavant stamps in order. 1 day 1 hour or 1 minute does not make a difference.

For Cambodia you could get an e-visa for $28, that would allow you 30 days as opposed to 1 for $20, but would save time and a passport page. You would be going to Cham Yeam, so it is allowed. However going to Poi Pet would be a much shorter drive.

doubt u will get the visa for $20, expect to pay 1,000 baht.

go to the casino for lunch

If you can wait, you can get it for $20 if you insist. Since there are no cross border buses at that crossing and $20 is what they are supposed to charge, all you have to do is politely insist and don't back down. There is little reason for them to refuse.

Several years ago at the Hat Lek crossing I witnessed a fellow who did as you suggest and become insistent on the $20 fee get "ENTRY REFUSED" stamped in his passport.

I tried to insist on the 20 Dollar only payment.

They than let me wait and wait, it was late already and getting darker and came to closing time.

Than they brought me inside the Immigration office to the higher ranking officer on duty.

Asked me questions, mocked around about a 1 day Thai overstay I just had got and paid in Thailand, they would not like Over stayers in Cambodia.whistling.gif

I lately took out the 1.200 Baht they wanted at that time and gave to them, the officer gave me than back 100 or 200 Baht, as he meant, I am surely poor! blink.png

I got a visa there recently (July) for $20- crossed when it was quiet (early afternoonish), told them I was out of baht and only had the $20 then started reading a book. They awkwardly looked at each other and accepted my $20 and I was out there. I think going at a time where nobody else is there helps a bit.

Most important thing is to be polite. Be very apologetic about how you only have $20 and no baht.

Another thing you could do is pay them $25 USD since that was what they quoted me after I said I didn't have any baht and I've seen that around the net too. $20 is if you want to be really stubborn and have all the time in the world, $25 if you just want to get it done quick without paying baht.
