BANGKOK, Oct 4 - The Ministry of Labour today reported that seven factories were forced to temporarily close due to floods, affecting about two hundred workers.

Acting permanent-secretary for Labour Jeerasak Sukonthachart said the factories were located in Nakhon Nayok, Surin, Si Sa Ket and Ubon Ratchathani.

While other factories in the flood-hit provinces remain opened, he said, the flooding however has hindered operations of 431 factories employing 6,726 workers.

So far, Mr Jeerasak said, no employee complaints have been received by the ministry but he said that officials have been instructed to monitor the situation and provide help to workers whose employment is at risk from flooding.

Meanwhile, the Energy Regulatory Commission has announced that about 2.8 million people in 20 provinces have been affected by the current flooding.

To ease the burden and help facilitate the residents, those living in designated flood-disaster areas will be given an extension of electricity bill payment for a maximum 45 days, compared to 15 days for normal situations. (MCOT online news)

2.8 million in 10 provences affected, what about those other 7 proviences that were reported as experiencing flooding?

A sizable part of the population is affected and the large areas of high population density have yet to get the oncoming flood water.. Well I hope people remember what they neglected to do the last flood and get a little better prepared this time. Although in many cases no amount of preperation will be enough.

Is the minister going to a high school prom or something from the looks of that big prom flower on his coat. Proms are more fun than floods...and I sure know as my moobaan was under 1.5 meters of water during the 2011 flood.

Another nail in the coffin!

What coffin? There was just a pol that people trust in the government and for 500 Baht each they trust even more.

Maybe the normal Somchai get 50 % more money for which he can by half the things as before (inflation is nice for politicians). But no problem for the Shinawattra clan.

This time foreign investors will start to relocate, and / or establish suppliers in other more capable countries.

Floods and disasters happen. It's how a government responds to the disaster and then mitigates for future occurrences.

The current government here have shown their ineptitude at handling the 2011 flood which their mismanagement made the situation worse. The vaunted plans and promises, money immediately allocated, and continued assurances have all achieved very little in the way of improvement. The inability to learn lessons or even desire to learn lessons is staggering. But, of course none of the government or their clan were affected, and there were some nice little earning opportunities too.

Nietzen is correct. Until the government, and successive governments are held accountable nothing will ever improve. The long term effect will be a regression in terms of the countries development compared to similar nations.

No they won't withdraw in my opinion. Not as long as Thailand continues to provide charm, hospitality and various other services to rich businessmen from all over the globe. They know this and are experts at what they do, so expect little to no change.

The perpetual cycle of floods has never been prevented by any Thai government including the present one.

The money allocated for flood prevention disappears faster than the floods.

Thailand is flood prone and the government should have implemented decisive measures to drain floodwaters. All the actions so far are superficial nonsense with no real flood mitigation.

Unfortunately, the people of Thailand never hold the government responsible for the consequences of floods, and are satisfied with a handful of coins from the government. While the government is not held responsible the floods will continue in a perpetual cycle.

The Thai media also bear responsibility because they are not hard enough on the government to assign blame and responsibility for the floods.

Thailand will remain a third world country as long as it can't prevent flooding.

Apparently though everyone told all those foreign investors that their factories wouldn't flood.

I think you may need to read the OP again.

The 7 factories were closed affecting 200 people.

The flooding hindered operations of 431 factories employing 6,726 workers.

And 10 billion dollars has been budgeted, or forfeited, to stop this.

2 years back!

Where's the money gone, and what anti-flood measures have been implemented?

That money was used to get them motivated to do something.

Now another lot will be spent to get them of the couch and look out the window and make another prophetic statement.

There is no talent in Thailand that is capable of more than fine coconut sculptures... let alone running a country

Industry Min: Industrial sites in Pathum Thani will not be flooded

PATHUM THANI, 5 October 2013 (NNT) - The Industry Ministry has assured businesses that factories in two major industrial estates in Pathum Thani province are well protected against flooding.

Permanent Secretary of the Industry Ministry Witoon Simachokedee led a team of delegates to inspect flood protection measures for Bang Kadi and Navanakorn industrial estates in Pathum Thani province.

He told the press during the visit that surveillance units are inspecting the sites on a daily basis and drainage capacity around the factories has increased. In addition, a permanent flood barrier has recently been built to combat flooding in the area.

Mr Witoon said the water level in the province is considered normal and significantly lower than that in 2011 and 2012.

So far, 41 factories and 7 community enterprises in Ubon Ratchathani, Surin, Nakhon Nayok and Chanthaburi have been affected by inundation, with damages worth around 13 million baht in total.
