Seven suspected insurgents are arrested yesterday following a gunfight in Narathiwat that left three suspected insurgents and two policemen dead.

NARATHIWAT: -- A shoot-out yesterday in the southern border province of Narathiwat left three suspected insurgents and two policemen dead, including a police major.

The gunfight, which lasted about four hours, broke out in the afternoon after policemen laid siege to a house in Narathiwat's Rusoh district. The property was believed to be a hideout for an unknown number of heavily-armed insurgents, police said.

Seven suspected insurgents were arrested in the incident. Most of them were wanted in connection with attacks in the region. A number of weapons and explosives were also seized.

The slain policemen were identified as Pol Major Atipat Suwanwiwat and Pol Lance Corporal Wichit Odthon. Among the suspected insurgents killed was Abdulrohing Daisoh, wanted by authorities in connection with more than 10 attacks in the South. Police say he was a leading operative of the insurgent movement.

Another policeman, Sergeant Yothin Chantaradej, was also injured in the gunfight.

Time for the UN to send in troops. More deaths in the Thai soutth than in many other trouble spots where UN troops have been sent in.

How often has the UN solved anything ? Very rarely.

You have my vote on that, needs to be stopped by third party, as they are not able to deal with the problem themselves!

The UN is not my father , springs to mind.

Finally a peace talk with a possibility of success.

how about Drones?

how about Drones?

Sorry, not possible; bees are in short supply these days!

100 years of mismanagement by the Bangkok based national security state apparatus.

As if the Thai government would even ask the UN to intervene while seeking to join the security council.

Besides this reall isn't a situation that the UN need to be involved in. The Thai government need to take a more pro-active roll.

My deepest sympathies to the families of the dead Police. Yes, the Royal Thai Army needs to go and smash these insurgents once and for all before they destroy Thailand. Push them all back to Malaysia!

How many of the insurgents are Malaysian or other foreigners? From reports some leaders are based in Malaysia and some operatives also cross the border, but the majority of the so called armed insurgents (numbers quoted by Thai security agencies approx 5k, with another approx 20k active 'sympathisers') are Thai Muslim nationals.

dodgiest thais are the thai/malay
