Bangkok residents warned over high tide

Despite flood barriers, water from the Chao Phraya River seeps into areas of the Chaiyasittawas Temple in Pathum Thani.

BANGKOK: -- The first high-tide period of this month is imminent - and Bangkok residents in riverside communities who do not have flood barriers must be ready for possible flooding, say authorities.

"Please move your belongings to higher ground during the coming high tide," Sunsern Rueangrit of Bangkok Metropolitan Administra-tion's (BMA) Bangkok Flood Control Centre said yesterday.

The first high-tide period in this month starts today and will run until tomorrow.

The second period will run from October 16 to October 22.

Sunsern said the water level in the Chao Phraya River might rise to 2.8 metres above mean sea level in communities without flood barriers. As of press time, the water level was 1.72 metres above the mean sea level.

Most communities along the Chao Phraya River's stretch in Bangkok have the protection of flood barriers. The construction of the structures, however, has not taken place in some areas in the face of opposition from residents. According to Sunsern, the water situation for Bangkok overall is not worrying.

"Weather forecasting suggests it may be raining in some parts of Bangkok this month but the rainfall won't be huge," he said.

The Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department, meanwhile, announced that floods were now inundating 28 provinces such as Chiang Mai and Rayong.

During the past few weeks, inundation has already caused 34 deaths and ravaged farmland and caused property damage.

Public Health Minister Pradit Sintavanarong said since September 17, his ministry had dispatched about 100 mobile medical teams to flood-hit areas to assist victims.

"They have treated 68,919 patients in those areas," he said.

Most common symptoms were athlete's foot, aches and pains, and headache.

Pradit said about 703 flood victims covered by mental-health assessments showed signs of stress.

"Of them, 230 needed close attention because they were very stressed and some become depressed," he said.

Sa Kaew's Khao Chakan district chief Sawanit Suriyakul na Ayutthaya yesterday lamented that flooding in his area had reached a critical point.

"At hard-hit spots, floodwaters have already risen to the second floor of people's houses," he said.

I love this "in the face of opposition". My old home in Bangplad was next door to a large condo with a restaurant on the river. They were a large cause of incoming water from the river into Bangplad. The local council turned up and said they were going to build the flood wall but they have "managed" by one method or another to have ensured that it hasn't happened. The government have been coming round over the past month reinforcing the flood barriers neighbouring this property but nobody has gone in there to install an effective flood barrier. I know of a 100m x 1.5m gap in the wall in that location that is only there because the condo is worried about losing its "riverfront" location and because it would make it hard for their customer (intentionally singular) to launch his boat or jetski.

Just another example of "influence" over sense.

What happened to "Bangkok will not flood"? rolleyes.gif

I guess, Plod & Sukhumband discussed the issue and decided, that some evil spirits and river godesses may not be playing along by their rules.

I don't get it its normal for some lower parts of BKK to flood, when they say BKK will not flood they mean a repeat of 2011. Every year parts of rangsit flood even last year with little rain. There is no way to protect it all especially as some people don't want the floodwall to be build like daftvaders post illustrates.

I am not a fan of this government but in This case its quite clear what they mean. I will start complaining if I am flooded again or if large parts of BKK flood. Not the minor flood because of high tide and loads of water from the North.

Bangkok possibly spared from floods despite coming high tide
By English News

BANGKOK, Oct 7 – The Bangkok Metropolitan Administration (BMA) called on residents of some Bangkok areas and on both sides of the Chao Phraya River to be on alert for two rounds of high tides on Oct 7-9 and Oct 16-22.

Sansern Ruangrit, an engineer at the Department of Drainage and Sewerage at BMA, said residents outside the flood-prevention dykes and on river banks should move their belongings to higher ground as the sea level would be higher during both periods.

He gave assurances that the BMA has closely coordinated with the Irrigation Department in flood prevention and most areas in the capital have been under control so far.

During the high tide on Oct 16-22, water from Ayutthaya province, 80 km north of Bangkok, will flow into the capital at 2,000 cubic metres per second and the water level outside the flood-prevention dykes could rise to 2.8 metres. The current level is 1.72 metres.

He said the BMA would open a sluice gate at Klong Saen Saeb to drain out waters into the Chao Phraya River through Klong Hok Wah on the eastern side of Bangkok.

The Meteorological Department reported that a low pressure weather system would cover some parts of Bangkok this month, resulting in less rain, he said.

Public Health Minister Pradit Sintawanarong said about 100 mobile medical units have made 1,065 visits to people in flood-hit areas since Sept 17.

Apart from flood-related illnesses, some people suffered from stress and depression, he said. (MCOT online news)

5:56 am Bangkok residents warned over high tide

hours later: Bangkok possibly spared from floods despite coming high tide

What a contradiction, now which one is it???? It may rain, it may not, only mother nature decides our face, but we cannot say we don't know because it's a loss of FACE.

Let it flood what's the problem. If people are silly enough to live there when they know flooding happens then more fool them - it's their choice.

So where do you suggest that the people from 28 flooded provinces move to?

I guess in imaginary land, you can just pack up and move your house to the top of a mountain.

They're just covering all the bases in their usual incompetent stupid way. Now they can say "we were right" whatever happens.

Top or side of the mountain is good, right up to the point where it rains so much that it causes landslides, and your house slides off lol

Prachin Buri floodis critical after overnight rain
By English News

13811147463309.jpg

PRACHIN BURI, Oct 7 -- Flooding in Prachin Buri is critical again after heavy overnight rain raised the water level in Kabin Buri district.

The flood in Prachin Buri's Prachantakham district was 1.2 metres deep after waters flowed in from Kabin Buri district which had a heavy downpour throughout the night.

Kabuin Buri's Kabin subdisrict municipality market was under 1.3 metres of water while Ban Sang and Si Maha Phot districts were flooded more then one metre just after the earlier flood eased.

Prachin Buri governor Chitra Promchutima earlier said that more water from the nearby province of Sa Kaeo could flow to flood the province again.

Elsewhere in the country, the Meteorological Department has warned of heavy rain today, particularly in Rayong, Chanthaburi, Trat, Phetchaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Ranong, Phang-nga and Phuket.

Strong winds and high waves were expected in the Gulf of Thailand with waves possibly 2-3 metres high. All ships should proceed with caution, and small boats keep ashore.

The department also advised that this week another high pressure weather system from China will cover the upper portion of the country, leading to lower temperatures. (MCOT online news)

Wait a second..... What was the other post only a few weeks ago....? The people needn't worry there'd be no flooding this year and everything was under control. Yep it's UNDER ....control. Great if you let the Chinese arrange the precautions for flooding. We can see on the news yearly how well THEY got it under control in China...!

Yeah but as soon as Yingluck said "please do not worry" [about flooding] on 21st September, everyone immediately looked into buying a dinghy. Nobody believes her, even the red fanclub are wondering who she is really batting for, and I'm sure people across Thailand were bracing for the same deluge and problems that happens every year, and will continue to happen until we get a new political leader who isn't just pointing at random maps and mumbling some feel-good speeches, but instead tackles problems proactively, and with substantial targeted investment.

Floods affect 2 million, eastern Bangkok braces for run-off

BANGKOK: -- About two million people in 27 provinces are still being affected by flooding, the Disaster Prevention and Mitigation Department reported on Sunday.

The death toll from the floods had risen to 31 as of Sunday morning, the department said.

Chanthaburi, Chon Buri and Khon Kaen provinces have recently been hit by flooding, but the situation had eased in Kanchanaburi, Prachuap Khiri Khan, Chumphon, Kalasin, Nakhon Ratchasima, Phayao, Mae Hong Son, Lampang and Mukdahan.

Meanwhile, authorities are speeding drainage in eastern Bangkok as more water has been discharged from the Pasak Jolasid dam in Lop Buri.

Adisak Khantee, director of the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration's Department of Drainage and Sewerage, said on Sunday that the Meteorological Department expected rainfall in 40% of the capital.

But the more worrying issue is the mass of water run-off from the North, as the amount of water in the Pasak Jolasid dam has exceeded its capacity, he said.

The Rama VI dam is receiving water discharged from the Pasak Jolasid dam at the rate of 859 cubic metres per second and some of the water will enter eastern Bangkok, he said.

Mr Adisak said the BMA is draining water out of canals in preparation for the run-off.

In Sa Kaeo, many main highways have been flooded and are impassable to any kind of road vehicle.

Pol Sub Lt Wisal Juengtrakul, a highway police officer, said a huge volume of run-off water from Khao Soi Dao mountains in Soi Dao district of Chanthaburi province has inundated much of Wang Sombun, Wang Nam Yen, Khao Chakan and Muang districts of Sakaeo.

A 700-metre section of Highway 317 (Chanthaburi-Sakaeo) at Ban Khao Laem in Wang Sombun district was under one metre of water on Sunday afternoon.

A section of the Aranyaprathet-Khao Hin Son road was also one metre under water at Ban Sa Khwan in Muang district.

Highway 33 (Sakaeo-Kabin Buri) was under 80cm of water, blocking all of its four lanes.

Sakaeo has virtually been cut off. It has become inaccessible from Prachin Buri's Kabin Buri district and Chachoengsao's Phanom Sarakham district.

Highway police were looking for routes which could be used to reach Sakaeo, Pol Sub Lt Wisal said.

The local government in Bangkok are being responsible by issuing an alert, they should be commended for it. There will be plenty of people moving their valuables out of harms way as a result. If it doesn't happen, then great, but preemptive emergency management is wise.

Agree. But the problem is that other senior politicians and has-been senior politicians have promised "no flooding, all under control, floods will be gone in 7 days, Bangkok won't flood" etc etc. Demonstrating yet again they don't have a clue what they're doing or how to manage something that is fairly predictable. Thailand is prone to flooding during the rainy seasons which happen every year. Wow - hard to predict that connection. De-forestation, allowing building over release canals, and not bothering to unclog remaining canals adds to the problems. More time is spent worrying about who's well connected area must be protected or how to scam the money earmarked for improvements than actually doing anything positive. Add to that the inane boll***s that the politicians push out which they are arrogant enough to think everyone believes and a press that never follows up. So although the warning is wise, it's just covering all the bases and contrary to previous recent statements.

Same same.

Can we all have a little empathy for anyone that will be subjected to this ordeal once again. Now is not the time to criticize anyone for living where they live etc... Now is the time to see what support we can all offer to make it a little easier for everyone concerned.

Like I mentioned before, those government officials and their agencies are getting paid under the table to delude the public....

I don't want to appear to be trolling, but what facts do you have to back up the your post of, "those government officials and their agencies are getting paid under the table to delude the public." Which government officials? Which agencies are deluding the public? How are the paying bribes under the table? Who paid them? How much was paid? Which table were they paid under? Do you have so much as a single document to prove that one government official or one agency actually accepted a bribe?

There is a thin line between rhetoric and slander here, but there is a line. Rhetoric will perhaps create anger in a lot of people, and it my get you deported, slander on the other hand will land you in jail, with a big lawsuit.

Don't make accusations that you can't back up. I can be angry at a government official or a policy, but I am very careful of what I accuse them of. I hope you take this the right way. Cheers
