Criminals in Phuket are “mostly outsiders”, says Gov
Naraporn Tuarob

Phuket Governor Maitree Intusut.

PHUKET: Governor Maitree Intusut went to Kamala and Kathu Police Stations yesterday afternoon (October 8) to be briefed on the ground about the security situation as the high season approaches.

At Kathu Police Station – which is in Patong – he was shown statistics from 2011-2013 revealing that during the low season, people from outside Phuket – other Thais, expatriates and tourists – total from 36,000 to 46,000. However in the high season the number rises to 50,000 to 65,000 per day.

The number of people registered as living in Patong is just 19,444.

The population is highly cosmopolitan, with police records showing foreign criminals and victims of crime came from 64 nationalities in the three years.

“The problem of Phuket is complex because we have to deal with foreigners and outsiders, which is two-thirds of the population” Gov Maitree told senior officers. “When crimes take place, please tell me where did [the perpetrators] come from because in most cases, they are not local Phuket people.”

Turning to exploitation of endangered species of wildlife, the governor said, “We have arrested many people but the penalty is very light. I will tell the central government that there must be more severe punishments available. None of the touts are Phuket locals.”

He also discussed non-criminal aspects of security, especially roads. “We will be adding more warning signs [about bends and steep hills] along certain roads, such as the one between Kamala and Cherng Talay.

“Many foreigners were not familiar with the roads here, so we have to enforce the wearing of helmets. If you don’t wear a helmet … we will deal with you according to the law. Also, because of the heightened risks from drunk driving during New Year, there will be checkpoints to check blood-alcohol levels.

On the sea, he stressed, fast action to save people is essential. “For marine safety, if someone is at risk of drowning, the faster they are rescued and received medical help, the less the risk that they will die.

“Safety is essential to making tourists feel satisfied and comfortable.”

“Safety is essential to making tourists feel satisfied and comfortable.” If he knows that why the damn he does not start to take action, some new road signs won't help here. If the root of the rotten isn't taken out it won't get better. coffee1.gif

Not all local Phuket people? No, there are plenty from other parts of Thailand too.

However, the majority of foreign criminals in Phuket, can only be criminals thanks to the corruption that exists amongst officials on the island.

Pay and get away. Don't pay and be put away.

I would like Governor Maitree to tell me where all these criminal "Thai outsiders" have come from.

If all of their criminals have moved to Phuket, I might move to where they have come from, because that place must be crime free. smile.pngsmile.png

This post has me in awe... Such an abundance of wisdom and determination in such a small article. With Mr. Intusut at the helm, Phuket will certainly steer into safer waters...

I mean, come on... even Stephen Hawking could not have said this better: On the sea, he stressed, fast action to save people is essential. “For marine safety, if someone is at risk of drowning, the faster they are rescued and received medical help, the less the risk that they will die.

"Spongebob for governor!!!" thumbsup.gif

The best solution for this guy is to just allow Phuket born people in Phuket (19,444 in Patong).

Do NOT allow outsiders (Thai or farang) in your 'beautiful' Phuket.....

You will see that most, if not all of Phukets problem are solved with this simple rule: No outsiders in Phuket!

Good luck, matey whistling.gif

so a foreigner riding a motorbike without a helmet makes you a criminal? Not the thais that rob, maim, kill etc. foreigners? TiT

Oi! Did you read the opening sentence of the para above? "He also discussed non-criminal aspects of security, especially roads"

“When crimes take place, please tell me where did [the perpetrators] come from because in most cases, they are not local Phuket people.”

No, but they are not all "foreigners" either . . . and I am dam_n sure the largest % will be other Thai's. But that doesn't count cos they are not from Phuket.

He is clearly speaking not only about 'foreigners' but also about Thais from outside Phuket. That is his main point. He is saying that the majority of criminals are from outside Phuket given the relatively small size of the registered Phuket population. Probably most are from other parts of Thailand (unless you want to argue that people from Phuket are more predisposed to criminal behaviour than Thais from other parts of the country or that foreigners are mostly responsible for the crime there.) And he wants to verify this assumption by having police record/track the origin of criminals/suspects. Not completely unreasonable...

Quite possible. In all my years, I've never met a taxi or tuk tuk driver in Bangkok who was actually born there. People go where the jobs are...

Enforce that with the locals while your at it. I see so many locals without helmets on bikes go through the U-turns right next to a police man directing traffic and nothing is done...

Oh, "My God" another statement by a high up as a way out of his guilt at not doing his job. Wow he is so advanced in medical sense, " If drowning/injured people are rescued quickly they will survive better"

He would obviously stop crime by around 75% if he banned outside people coming into Phuket.

No change be the same in 20yrs time only worst.

''The population is highly cosmopolitan, with police records showing foreign criminals and victims of crime came from 64 nationalities in the three years.''

Is that half a percentage point or a full percent of all crimes that comes from these 64 nationalities....

When someone avoids showing appropriate statistics, any wishful thinking can be presented....
