'Racist' LA police dogs bite only minorities - report

LOS ANGELES: -- Police officers in Los Angeles have long faced accusations of institutional racism, but now it appears their dogs may be unjustly discriminatory, too.

A new report focusing on the Canine Special Detail of the LA Sherriff’s Department (LASD) has uncovered a vast increase in the number of minority individuals bitten by police dogs since 2004.

And in the first six months of this year, every single victim of a bite by a LASD dog was African-American or Latino. The data was published in a new report by the Police Assessment Resource Centre (Parc), a Los Angeles-based non-profit organisation, devoted to “advancing effective and accountable policing”.

According to Parc records, the number of Latino individuals bitten by LASD canines went up 30 per cent between 2004 and 2012, from 30 to 39 bites. The number of African-Americans bitten increased by 33 per cent over the same period.

Meanwhile, police dog bites caused injuries at a much higher rate than alternative deterrents such as batons, tear gas and even guns.

“Crime rates are lower in these areas, but the stark disparity leads us to wonder why canine deployments seem to occur disproportionately in less affluent areas with larger minority populations.”

A recent investigation by the US Department of Justice also found that in areas policed by the LASD, “African Americans, and to a lesser extent Latinos, are more likely to be stopped and/or searched than whites, even when controlling for factors other than race, such as crime rates.”

The authors of the Parc report recommended that the LASD work on improving its canine-deployment policies, and keep track of the enforcement activities of individual dogs and their handlers.

Because these minorities are the ones comitting the majority of the crimes. It's not racist, it's just there's more black and latino criminals then there are from other races.

maybe they recruited dogs from the Ayrian Brotherhood- natural evolutionary processes writ large (from Ayrian to attack Alsation in a single generation-genetic modification has come a long way you know)?

Perhaps in the interests of political correctness the LAPD can encourage their dogs to bite whitey, until at least the biting shows no bias, I'm sure expensive government appointed actuaries could give a target number to aim for.

The dogs are for sniffing out drugs and other such goodies, and they'll turn the dogs loose on someone with a weapon, risking the dog's life rather than a human life. The dogs are trained to take down a perp if the dog survives it. Most people are afraid of being attacked by a big dog and the dogs are usually able to quickly subdue most people.

Don't want to get bitten? Cooperate. The dog's handler has it on a leash until and unless an attack is needed. The dog won't attack unless commanded to do so.

Does the perp want to be taken out by a dog, or would he rather be shot? The dog is considered a humane way to take down a dangerous perp.

Gas, stun guns? Not at any distance or circumstance where a gun or a group is the danger.

Because there is more criminal activity and more criminals in those areas. And before any "racist, racist" crying occurs; keep in mind that the majority of crime victims in those areas are minority populations.

Minorities commit most of the crime so the dogs are right on the mark. Police dogs are generally smarter than the liberal politicians who worry about this stuff.

While your comment may make a nice sound bite at a "Jail the Bankers" rally, it does not square with reality. Below are just a few examples (about 10min search to find these) of such "big-time" criminals you are alluding to. There are many more.

Bernie Madoff was sentenced to the maximum sentence of 150 years in federal prison. His brother Peter was sentenced to 10 years. Madoff's "accountant" David G. Friehling has pled guilty and is awaiting sentencing.

Jeffrey Skilling, former CEO of Enron, is currently serving 14 years in prison. Andrew Fastow, former CFO of Enron served a 6-year sentence (he cooperated with the prosecutor in other cases).

Kwame Kilpatrick was recently sentenced to 28 years in prison after conviction on 24 federal felony counts, including mail fraud, wire fraud, and racketeering.

Not that I want to be taken down by a police dog but it may be safer than being taken down by policemen with a baton, Taser or gun. A trained police dog will do exactly as its handler asks without prejudice. Take the person down and hold until the police can take control and put cuffs on the alleged criminal. Very often they one being chased is more afraid of the dog than the cop.
